possible mis reading on gryphon??

possible mis reading on gryphon??

So i took my first trip with my 05 f150 and trailer with two four wheelers. About 70 miles out of town, i got a high EOT reading. All of my other temps where right where they all ways are. ECT, TFT, CHT, all were normal did even move. (besides the TFTs up and down) So every time i went up a incline it would send out a high EOT, then flat and down hills it would go down. I would think if the oil got hot, everything else would get hot?

so is this something wrong with the sensor, or my oil system? I think it only has a tranny cooler. I mean two four wheelers is not even a heavy load, i would hate to see what happened with heavy load.

Hey.

Define 'high'.

What is the alarm setpoint? It simply may be too low.

Sorry meant to say that, its goes off at 225, the highest it got was 234. After the first one went off, i cruised at 65. And still every little hill it would go off.

O and its 5.4l, just changed the oil and filter before the trip.

For engine oil, that's not considered high.

Correct - Engine oil temperature will go all over the place, depending on engine load. There's no oil cooler in the engine, so it spikes very easily. I stopped monitoring mine for this very reason. Mine would easily exceed 240 on long uphill climbs (10-12 miles) while towing.

I suggest you monitor the cylinder head temperature (CHT) instead. That will tell you if you're having problems. Since the coolant temperature (ECT) is simply inferred from the CHT (no separate sensor), I see no reason to monitor it.

ok good to know!! So what do you think i should set the oil alarm at? What is a high reading for the CHT? Is It worth running a oil cooler?

No, I wouldn't try to install an oil cooler, the wide fluctuations in oil temperature are normal.

I have my oil temp alarm set at 250. The only information I could ever find on damage to the oil due to temperature was that it could ignite somewhere above 350 degrees as I recall.

The engine will go into failsafe mode if the CHT reaches 258 degrees. It shuts down if the temperature is 310 degrees. My CHT alarm is set at 240 degrees.

Before you ask, I have my TFT alarm at 225 degrees and the battery voltage alarm at 12.6 V.
