89 towing will give you the most towing capability. How much are you towing? A truck that is near or at max has the trans hunt by dropping down to 3rd gear. Just get an 89 tow tune and put in 91 or 93 octane and tow away.

I would get a tow tune for the type of fuel you want to run. In Iowa, our most common gasoline is 89 octane and contains 10% ethanol. If you want to run premium (91 or 93) I would tell VMP you want a 91 or 93 octane tow tune. You need to run the type of fuel your tune is set for.

Should be running 89 in a 89 tune for best performance.

Tuners usually carry 3 different tunes and if the owner wants to change then the fuel is there alredy.

But running 89 on a 87 tune is a waste of money and less performance,I'm aware tuners can gave several tunes loaded on them.

Do you already have a programmer? If not you get three custom tunes. If you're ordering one I would just go with the 87 octane or 93 octane.

I ordered a SCT X3 from 5 Star and 3 custom tunes back last fall. I was only interested in the 89 perf/tow tune, but came up with 2 others to complete the package. I noticed very little difference. I was mostly wanting to achieve better throttle response from a dead stop, and maybe some less awkward shift points. I notice no difference in throttle from a stop and the shifting was goofier than stock, seemed to downshift going up hill, which then required a heavier foot to throwing it back into higher gear. I didn't like it at all. I returned to stock and have been waiting on one custom tune (87 perf) from Troyer since Oct 25. It is very frustruating, but I hear it's worth the wait. If you're going to spend 400+ on the tune and flasher, make sure you get the best custom tune you can. I'll let you know if it's any better when I get it, hopefully within another month or I'm going to go nuts!!!!
