Question '90 f-150 chip?Mike....

How are you Mike, it seems that you are the man to ask.I'm driving a '90 F-150 4x4, 302, AOD, and a shift kit has been installed. I'm new to the chip and was wondering if it could be used. Reading the news here tells me that the chip produces a crisper shift. Will the shift kit be affected or visa-versa? I had the shift kit installed to help with towing a 22' 5th wheel. I am definitely interested in improving the performance of my truck. I love that truck and I read how the love gets better with the chip. Thanks

Hi nodanger,

You have an earlier transmission that is not fully computer controlled, so it will not have all the effects on your 1990 transmission that it does on the 1993 & newer vehicles.

You''ll of course get the power gains from the Superchip, and that will help with towing, etc. It will also work just fine with the shift kit that you have installed, so that's OK.

It might be best to just give us a quick call, and we can go over exactly what you're looking for, etc., so we make sure we're all on the same wavelength on what you can expect from the Superchip. If you'd like to call, we're here Monday thru Friday from 10am to 7pm, Eastern time, and we're always happy to speak with you.

Basically, you can count on the power gains from the Superchip, but not much difference in the shifting most likely. There may be some early elements of some aspects of Ford's soft-shift strategies in your powertrain program, and if so (we'll know that once we know your computer code), you'll get those benefits as well. But by and large, your tranny is just a bit to early to be fully computer controlled, and thus what the Superchip can do for the shift characteristics specifically is limited. That in no way negates it's power gains, of course.

Thumbs up thanks Mike

Thanks Mike for two things..#1 for getting me this info in quick time and # 2, for giving me the option of giving you a call for a discussion on exactly what it is I am in need of from the Superchip. So far everything I have read and heard on the chip has been very appeasing. I am looking forward to installing one as soon as the pocket-book will let me. Thanks again.

Hi nodanger,

You're very welcome of course!

And there is no rush, this can be done at any time that your situation permits, etc.

Just out of curiosity, if you wouldn't mind sharing this info with me, which brand of shift kit did you install or have installed, and was it a kit that offers your choice of multiple levels of firmness, what level of firmness was it installed at if so, etc. Just curious to know which kit you use and how well you like it, as we're mostly dealing with the later transmissions, 4R70W's, 4R100's, etc., so we don't get as much of a chance to speak with the pre-92 owners as much as the later model owners quite naturally, so I was just curious as to what you used and how well it worked in your AOD, etc.

We usually have used Transgo shift kits in most of our FoMoCo's that we've installed shift kits on, they're all later-model vehicles Bauman is doing some really nice things with their shift kit as well........

Lightbulb shift kit info 4 Mike

Hello Mike, sorry it took a couple days to get back at ya...The shift kit my tranny guy installed is a kit for AOD trannys from"Shift Technology Products", a division of Superior Transmission Parts.inc....kit number- 13A-1887. For additional info contact at (850) 575-7155. Thats about all I got for ya. I hope that helps. It seems to do the job with a very aggressive shift. I don't lose anything when towing. It definitely likes a load on it. Sometimes I think the shift from OD to drive is pretty hard , but I have gotten use to it. He told me some people don't like the heavy shift. Hopefully this brand was a good choice, he kinda made it for me. The tranny was in a rebuild and so I decided to go with it. Definitely has some good shift pressure. Anyway , there you go. And yes it is a definite when the $$$ are right on the Superchip.

Thanks again

Hi nodanger,

OK, thanks for your feedback on that kit.

I know what you mean when you say it likes a load on it, all too well. Years ago, I used to run a Cheetah reverse manual shift valve body on my built Mopar 727 TqF tranny, which eliminated all manual functions among other things, so it always had to be shifted, up and down, to change gears. It only took 1 or 2 tmes for me to learn to *never* upshift with my foot off the gas, as with that much line pressure & other mods, KA-BANG! and there goes the rear u-joint. Couldn't upshift with that much line pressure without having my foot on the gas to take up the slop in the driveline. But wow, did I ever *love* that shift feel...........

Have fun,
