Which tune to use on a long trip?
Which tune to use on a long trip?
I have the custom 93 tune, canned tow tune, and 87 performance canned tune on my PHP Gryphon right now.
I'm driving up to Myrtle Beach with my GF for a concert on Thursday. That is going to be a good 3.5 hour drive or so.
I was wondering what tune Yall thought would be the best for economy? I think the 93 custom tune would probably be best but not sure. It's gonna be at least 2 tanks of gas for the trip probably 2.5. so would love to get some good mpgs while running interstate up there. I usually cruise around 75-80mph on the hwy just for economy reasons
I was getting 15mpg with my new wheels & tires around town.....well my commute to work 60 mile trip from 45-55mph areas. Haven't calculated it in quite sometime though
Thoughts?

You may get better gas mileage on the 93 tune, but your end fuel cost will be higher. Load the 87 performance tune and put it on cruise control at the speed limit or lower.
On a 200 mile trip, the time difference between 60 mph and 75 mph is only 40 minutes.......
In your case, you can take US-17 up there instead of the Interstate - sure, it's going to take longer, but you will get a lot better gas mileage *AND* save a lot of miles..........

No, a custom 87 Perf tune from PHP. The only canned tune I have is the towing tune.

Now, drive the same downhill/uphill combination, but this time maintain a constant throttle position with the CC off. The truck will speed up going downhill and then will use that excess speed going up the next incline, possibly "coasting down" before the top of the next rise and maybe finally unlocking the TC or downshifting if the speed drops enough.
Now, I'm not saying to actually drive like that, because the speed variation would be maddening. But, I suspect you can gain some advantage, especially in hilly terrain by leaving the CC off and taking advantage of downhill speedups.
But you're dead on with the other suggestions. 87 octane tune, speed limit or lower! (And I use the CC whenever I drive on the highway, unless the traffic makes it impractical.

I have to agree on going with the 87 octane tune. It may not give you your absolute best MPG's, but the difference between 87 perf and 93 perf tunes is minimal. Plus you have to factor in that 93 costs more.
Go with the 87 tune.
Go with the 87 tune.
Thanks for all the advice guys
My earlier post was really triggered by one from a former member that stated using CC, "Always saves gas - proven fact!" This member and I didn't get along too well, :o so I tend to react in funny ways when I'm reminded of him.
As I said, glc, I was "respectfully disagreeing with one small point", because I respect your opinions.

And, I doubt not using CC even in hilly terrain is going to add much over 0.5 miles per gallon anyway. As I said, I ALWAYS use CC, even when towing, because I find it a pain to maintain a steady speed with my foot. When I'm towing though, I'm always "helping" it when going up hills so that the speed doesn't drop too much before the CC tries to kick in (and that prevents it from cutting off on steep hills too).
