Flip Chip owners only!
I have got to spend some $. I just cant decide whether the flip chip or regular chip makes the most sense. I put alot of miles on (25k a year) and like the performance when I need to get away from the jerk next to me. However I'm really struggling wanting to pay premium gas prices when I'm towing a trailer on vacation.
I see that I have two obtions
1st I could buy the regular chip and take it out when I go cruiz'n for the sun and not have to pay premium gas prices.
or
2nd I could pay an extra hundred and just flip the switch when I want to be cheap and I'm not in a hurry.
I would like to hear from the guys who have a flip chip and really understand the Pros & Cons?

LocoScrew,
I have only three things to say. Shifting Shifting Shifting. If you get the regular chip (like I did at first) and decide that gas prices are too high and take it out, the stock shifting sucks. On the other hand, for the extra money the flip chip costs, that money could be going towards premium gas. I got the flip chip and I like having the choice. My $.02.

Ok don't flame me, I'm a single program chip guy
But, I agree totally with 2000regcab54. With the flip chip, you don't lose the improved shifting with either program. I think it's a better value for your money. You have a choice, and you have improved shifting 100% of the time.
I have no problem with the Premium fuel because I'm one of the few that has seen a good increase in MPG. But had I to do it over again, I'd probably go flip chip.

I went the FlipChip route for my wifes truck with the same intention of shifting back and forth between gas octains when I tow and don't tow. However, wife liked the 93 oct program so much that when I tried to shift it back the reg program she got mad about the performance diference and now will only use it set to the 93 oct program. If I had known this before hand I would have saved the money and bought the single program chip.
LocoScrew,
I've had my Flip-chip in for a little over a year now, and while it stays in the regular gas position 95% of the time, it is nice knowing I can top off the tank with 93 octane, flip a switch, and have some fun! Now that gas prices are starting to drop again, my next tank will probably be high test.
The thing to remember is, no matter what octane you use, you always have the benefit of the improved shifting, removal of the shift delay and top speed limiter, and the option to increase HP! So, don't think of it as paying extra for something that is only used occasionally, all the benefits of the chip, except the HP increase, are always there and always in use!
I justified it in my mind as paying for a custom chip and getting a regular superchip for free!
I'm 100% satisfied, and when I replace my current truck with a new one, I'll go with the Flip Chip again, the flexability it provides is worth it!

Very informative thread, and very interesting perspectives on the Flip Chip from a number of angles. Excellent!
The majority of our customers who do not have custom programming use the single-program Superchip and just run it on premium all the time, as the increased fuel costs just really aren't that much in the final analysis, not more than $150-$200 a year for most people, though of course not for *all*.
For anyone who wants to run on 87 octane some of the time, the Flip Chip is well worth the small additional cost to have a fully optimized powertrain program for either level of octane, and it will feel a heck of a lot better than removing the Superchip altogether. Of course, this is a decision for each individual to make, and obviously there are people who feel differently about that. This thread should help anyone to make that decision!

Hi Locoscrew
Understand what your asking, Was same for me. I took the time to read all the new & old threads on "flipchip" users & single program users. 87 VS 92oct. etc.
Most of what i read eventually made sense. Alot of threads were posting similiar results. That helped me make up my mind. Good people here!!!!!
Just reason it thru. Decide whats right for yourself. If your looking for that little extra performance, for the $, not a bad way to go.
We all have different wants & needs, so take your time. I did, no regrets, other than my next ride want be lacking in the stock power dept.
Good luck. OT

Another point to remember - if you need custom programming (like correction for aftermarket gears) a flipchip is actually cheaper than a single program.
BTW - Mike - If I want to change my flipchip for a Magnacharger program (but keep my gear correction) what would you put on the "flipside"; also what does the reprogramming cost?

Hi Ian,
Good point, that's exactly right, for anyone needing custom programming, you come out cheaper using the Flip Chip anytime custom programming is required.

LocoScrew,
I asked the same questions you have before I got my flipchip about two months ago. I appreciated the honest response I got from 2000RegCab54 concerning possible mileage increases with premium fuel, thanks regcab! Since installation I have never run in the regular mode. I liked the option of being able to change fuel grades, due to unpredictable future prices and still retain the shifting benefits. I had planned on switching to regular for non-towing road trips and during the winter when the fuel blend changes in this state. For me the flipchip was the way to go and I am happy with my decision. You’ll have to decide obviously what is best for you. Good luck.

Warner Robins...
PaulT: Just noticed your location...I live here too.
Watch out for the 'county mounty' at the 147 marker!
My location shows 'Macon'(work), but I live just South of Centerville.

Lightninrod,
Your right down the street! I live across from Feagin Mill Middle School, and I work on the base! I've probably seen your truck around! I've been drooling over the Lightnings they have at Warner Robins Ford, just can't justify the cost... Yet!
