Do I need a programmer?
Ok so I have a 2008 FX4 with a 5.4L and a SIDO Flowmaster exhaust with 38,xxx miles. I am about to put 305/55/20 tires on the stock wheels with a 2.5'' AS leveling kit. I have the parts to do the Gotts Mods and a drop in filter but I just haven't had the time to do it yet this summer. The truck came with 3:55 gears instead of the standard 3:73s. Right now I'm currently getting about 14-16 MPG depending on how and where I'm driving and in the winter time I was only getting like 13 MPG. I don't do much towing and I have a 20 minute highway commute to work everyday.
My question is should I get a programmer to help with the tires and Gotts Mod? If so, is an Edge with canned tunes gonna do the trick or should I buy a Gryphon with custom tunes? I want to continue running 87 octane fuel if I buy a programmer and don't want to spend more than $300. I see the Edges on here all the time between $250 and $300. The only other future performance mods that I am considering is higher gear ratios. Thanks for the help!

If you have different height tires from stock, or different gears, your odemeter will be off and you can't calculate your mpg accurately. Your speedometer will be off as well. The Edge wil definitely help with more power, but the Gryphon with a custom tune is worth the extra. A little more power than the Edge, but much better shifting and downshifting.

The new tires will be taller by almost a half inch from stock oem size....that's if you're currently running 275/55r20's

I think I will start will just the Edge and that way I can change the tires size on it when I install the new tires. I am currently running the stock Pissarellis. What type of canned tunes are on the Edge? Will there be one for a 87 octane performance? And maybe down the road when I decide to get the gears I'll send it to PHP and have it upgraded with custom tunes. Thoughts???
Have you read the sticky threads at the top of this forum? Edge comes with 3 tunes. 1 is just a tranny mod, 2 is an 87 towing tune but can be run all the time. It just fades pretty rapidly in upper rpms, like passing on two lane roads. 3 is a 91 performance tune. The problem with starting with an Edge is that when you do want a custom tune, and most people do, then you have to send the unit into PHP to be converted. That means you have to return to stock until you get the unit back and that is not a good experience. Do yourself a favor and go for the Gryphon up front. I had the Edge for 30,000 miles and thought I was satisfied. Finally got the custom tunes and I would not want to go back to the Edge canned tunes.

As an alternative I have the diablosport predator, which has canned 87 octane performance tunes. This can also be custom upgraded at any of their cmr dealers as they call them. I paid 285 for mine from autoanything.com and have been happy with just the canned tunes. Better performance and corrected speedometer. Still get between 16 and 17 mpg when I use quality 87 octane. (chevron)

save yourself some money and just buy the gryphon. I bought the edge evo thinking that it will do just fine and that i wouldnt need custom tunes. Boy was i wrong. The evo is a great programmer, but the gryphon is so much better. Running 87 gas and getting the power of the 91 gas on my gryphon is definitely worth the extra money up front.
I understand that the Gryphon is BETTER than just a regular Edge Evo but I really dont see the point in spending an extra $200 in my case. I just need to adjust the tire size so my speedo and mileage isnt way off. The performance part of it is just an added bonus. Plus its a 5000 lb truck, I dont want or need it to go fast...I have my Mustang for that

The consenus, from those that have run both the Edge and the Gryphon, that you are much better off going straight to a custom tune. Just get the Edge and be happy. I was until I got the custom tune and I now whould hate to go back to the canned tunes. The shifting/downshifting difference alone is worth the difference.

Agreed, but I can buy a used Edge Evo in the classifieds all day long for less than $300. Maybe I exaggerated a little with the $200 but it still would be about $150 cheaper to buy a used Edge Evo for around $280 compared to a Gryphon with one custom tune for $430. Either way the Gryphon is out of my budget right now. I have $300 to spend right now. I'm thinking of waiting another paycheck and buying the SCT X3 because that comes with 3 custom tunes for around $400. And I can buy it local from a buddy. Plus I'm not liking the idea of the Evo sitting on my dash, it looks cool but it just gives somebody another reason to break in and steal it.

Go for it. As to the unit on the dash, that is just as important to me as the custom tune. I monitor engine temp, tranny temp, digital speed(accurate where the speedometer is not), and voltage constantly. I have had it on my dash for 6 years and would hate to have to do without it.
If you don't want the monitor, the SCT X3 is a good option.
