Lack of Performance
Lack of Performance
I got my tuner about 5 days ago. Its an Edge Evo. I installed it and put it on level 1 with 87 Octane in the tank. The shifts were firmer and I was liking it. I ran the tank til it was really empty, put in 93, and put some more 93 in the other day. I am now running it on level 3, and it is still shifting firmer, but I have less power than running the truck stock it seems.
Anyone have any ideas what could be the problem? I have the display showing temperatures.
Tranny temp ~150-160F
Coolant ~190-192F
Cylinder Head ~198-200
Intake Air ~60F
Should i change it to monitor anything else? I know the temperature gauges on here are not the most accurate(understatement of the year from what I read about them
) but I just watched it while it was on economy and it stayed the same on performance basically.
I know I am going to get a lot of "Send it to PHP" but I don't plan on spending any more money on my truck if it is not needed. I plan on getting something a little quicker(Thinking sub 3 second 0-60) for my daily driver

You are correct!!!! PHP!!!
I had my gryphon and ran ths canned tunes until I got the custom tune from PHP which took about 3 months. The canned tunes were definately an improvement from stock. BUt the custome tunes were even better. I have to admit after having the custom tune for almost a year I sometimes feel like the truck is sluggish, but then I try to remember that it is a truck and the difference I felt after the custom tune was installed.
A custom tune would be the most noticable difference. For less money you can add some small things that might give you some noticable gains.
Do the DWV intake mod. A cold air intake that changes the intake tube is not necessary and not recommended unless you have a ccustom tune that accounts for the new intake. Our engines run lean fromt he factory, evidentally adding an intake without the custom tune can damage the engine.
Clean the trottle body. I try to do this once/ year. A little bit of cleaning can give you a better idle and possibly better throttle response.
Go to the auto store and get some MAF sensor cleaner and clean your MAF sensor. If you have never done it and you have more than 7000 miles it should be done. Some on here recommend it every time you change your oil. It's quick and easy so thats very possible.
If you have more than 30,000 miles and have never done so, replace your fuel filter. Also another routine thing to be done everny 30K. Its pretty easy and cheap.
These things are not as "fun" as a custom tune of programmer, but can make a difference and give a little more get up.

Well if you aren't going to upgrade then look at your air filter, fuel filter, MAF sensor and throttle body. If you jumped to the 93 after filling and started hot rodding it, there is a chance you had too much timing with the remaining 87 that will be in the fuel line. Then it might pull some, but I kinda doubt that because I know my custom 87 performance tune is quicker than my canned 93.
Seriously try this....
Put your truck back to stock level 0
Disconnect your negative battery cable
Turn your headlights on
Clean your tb
Clean your maf
Change your fuel filter
Turn your headlights back off
Reconnect the negative battery cable
Drive 100-150 miles
Reload the level 3 performance canned tune.....

So you do not want to spend money on a custom tune because your canned tuned did nothing for you? Did you notice any difference? If you have a Edge CS or CTS a custom tune would cost you $60 from PHP and Bill can custom tune your truck to your liking. Plus no need to upgrade to gryphon if you have the CS or CTS.
My canned tow tune on on my CTS is so much better than stock. I don't see how a custom tune would get any better, but I guess it does from what everyone says.

Stock vs. Tuned
I posted this in the PHP Forum, but I know there is not a lot of traffic, so I'm posting here to add to the cumulative experience.
Well, it had been about 1.5 months since I drove the truck. I got home, added steering wheel controls, headlights and installed my awaiting (used) Gryphon level 2 canned tune, and drove it up to the audio shop to hook up the wheel control module. The truck seemed "normal" with perhaps just touch of more pep, but I could feel a definite difference in shifting. To be honest, I wasn't that impressed, but ...okay.
Well Mon., I had to take it in for service before I headed back out of town, so I returned it to stock before going to the dealer; NOW I could tell the difference!! It was because I had not driven it in so long I had forgotten how "doggy" it was. When I returned from the dealership and loaded the level 2 again, I was back in business!
Now I'm just waiting on my 87 Performance tune that is complete and waiting for me to return. I have no doubt it will be better than canned.

It's very easy to forget that we're driving a 5-6,000# brick here instead of an Indy racer or a rail. We keep expecting to be "surprised" by our truck's performance, but once we get used to the way it drives, the surprise goes away. I don't have an answer for this except to switch back to stock now and then to remind yourself how bad things really were.

That was the point of my post; to convey to the OP of the "need" or "benefit" of the custom tune. I wasn't poo-pooing the Gryphon, quite the opposite!
