Edge Programmer, Speedo, and GPS
Edge Programmer, Speedo, and GPS
Hey Gang!
Just got the Edge Evo this weekend and put it in my 03 SCrew. I am loving the options this programmer is giving me with my truck, but experiencing one problem. The Edge is running about four mph faster than the speedo. This is no big deal to me. What is a big deal is when I compare the Evo and the speedo to the GPS speedo apps on my phone, the GPS is reading 13-19 mph SLOWER than the Evo and truck speedo. I even tried to compare this to a second GPS speedo app I use and I’m getting the same reading.
My tire size is 305/70/16 which, according to the formula in the Evo manual, comes out to 2618 mm.
Any thoughts on this? If I leave it as-is, I am potentially going nearly 20 mph over the speed limit. I already have “lead foot syndrome”, so I don’t need any more assistance getting the attention of our excellent law enforcement folks in Texas.
BTW-I have been searching the web this morning for help on this, but I not seen anyone with a range this drastic.

305/70R/16 should be between 2487 (5%) and 2540 (3%) (accounting for squish).

Did you verify the gear ratio?

I did not verify the gear ratio. Because I have stock gears, I did not make any changes to the gear ratio. Am I understanding this correctly? If I'm not, how do I verify the gear ratio? Thanks for the help. BTW- my truck is a 2003 4.6 V8 SuperCrew.
Thanks for the re-calc. I'll try it when I get off work today.

My Edge always entered 3.73 gears as a default when I really have 3.55 gears. I had to change it every time I changed tunes. Check the default. If your Edge is dead on with the gps, then your truck will normally be 2-3 mph fast. Ford builds them that way.

"If your Edge is dead on with the gps, then your truck's dashboard speedo will normally read 2-3 mph faster."
Think of it as a way Ford tries to keep you from getting a ticket. When your dashboard speedo reads 77, you're really only puttering along at 74-75.

Thanks Jack and Bluejay! Let me clarify the problem...
The Edge and the truck's speedo is within 3-4 mph of each other, but when I compare it to two different GPS apps I have on my phone, the Edge and the truck's speedo are running as high as 19 mph faster. For example, edge reads 74 mph, truck's speedo reads 70 mph, and GPS reads 55 mph.

Does it feel as if you are doing only 55 or closer to 75? If you are really doing only 55, then as previously suggested, check the gears to see if it is defaulting to what is really in your truck. That is a huge difference for it to be all tire adjustment.

It feels like I'm doing 55 when the Evo says 75. Thanks to your help and others on this and another forum, I'm pretty sure that I need to adjust the gear ratio. I'm gonna check this in the parking lot at work when I get off and see how if it makes a difference on my way home.

Now, let me respond to your earlier post.
It is normal, in fact you should ALWAYS see the Edge speed and the dashboard speed within about 2-3 mph of each other. And, the dash speed is normally higher than the Edge speed. They BOTH get their information from the PCM, and it tells them what to display using the Tire Size (TS) and Gear Ratio (GR) values you have programmed into it. If either the TS or the GR is wrong, both the Edge and dash speeds will be wrong.
As was previously discussed - IF you open the Custom Options menu you MUST check and possibly reset BOTH the GR and TS! Once you do this, the next time you open the Custom Options menu, scroll immediately to "Load Previous Settings" and hit <Enter>. That will put the last values of TS and GR that you used into the tune. You may then change either one as needed. Once you get the GR right, it won't need to be changed anymore. If the Edge speed is slow, increase TS, if the Edge speed is fast, decrease TS.

The initial programming was so easy the first time, I didn't give it a second thought.
WRONG!
Talk about a sick feeling in your gut when you get a no start!
Great advice Jack.
