2009 Super Chip Suggestions
2009 Super Chip Suggestions
I have a 2009 FX4 Screw, 5.4 V8, im getting ready to get lifted 6in. here shortly with 35's. I have been hearing different stories from others with and with out the super chips. My mechanic says it will make a big difference in gas mileage, transmission shift points, sets my speedometer correctly, etc... and that I defiantly need it. I have also been told that being a gas truck, not diesel, the super chip isn't gonna make big enough difference worth the $300-$400 I would be spending on the super chip. Does anyone have a super chip on their truck? Is there a noticeable difference? Would you recommend me to get one? Thanks for all suggestions posted.
The best bang for the buck for your 2009 would be a SCT X3 with custom tunes.
http://www.vmptuning.com is where I got mine. Only a SCT program can program the transmissions on the 09+ at this time. I'm very happy with mine.
While were at it, what gears are in your truck at this time?

Thanks Chalybs, I have 3.73 gears right now. Ive been told when lifted, I won't have to change them so hopefully people are telling me correct. Be another big $$ project to switch them out. How much difference did you find with the SCT programmer you installed?
It's always a good idea to regear with 35" and over tires...takes additional stress away from the tranny
Bigger tires also should have bigger brakes.
Contact VMP tuning for an xcal3.

You could use some gears but with 3.73s you way ahead of the game rather than the other factory gears. With the low first gear we have I think you'll be fine. Heck the Raptor only has what 4.10s and comes factory with 35s. I think your fine there.
The 87 Tow and Performance tunes are ok but you can't get much more timing over stock. I actually had to make Justin back the timing down as it was pinging. Not a whole hell of alot of power to be made, maybe like 15 hp or less. The biggest difference is how the transmission acts and how the torque converter locks and unlocks. The truck is much more apt to holding the gear on a hill. We have alot of hills here and I had plenty of time to get used to driving several of them before my tunes. One hill in a 55 zone with the cruse on would always drop to 4th half way up, now it only drops to 5th and increases speed over the crest without racing the engine. All over the truck feels much more reponsive and more "sure" of itself. Without the other tuners able to tune the trans I would think a 87 tune would be nearly worthless on the others.
In 93 Performance it's like a whole new animal. I've been running this the most, its just fun to drive. The first two tanks of gas I was playing all the time. Apparently the traction control is turned off, not sure, but I can get the truck sideways with little effort. Either way both tanks I still get 17.8 mpgs. (Hand calc) This latest tank I've been trying to mind my manners to see how it does mpg wise and I just filled it up not 15 minutes ago and it was 18.9 mpg. In the summer the best it ever did was 19 on a long interstate drive. Cooler weather I should lose some and its been just as good.

(Historically I have had his custom tunes on my past three F-150's dating back to 2001, and am presently running the SC canned tunes due to fact that I have not had time to get back to his shop in Covington Va. due to some serious family health issues)
As close as you are to his location, I suggest you give them a call, schedule yourself an appointment, and take a trip over so you don't have a wait for the best tunes money can buy for your F-150..
