Fail Safe Engine Mode

Hello guys out there can you help me? My wife was driving our 2005 F-150 to work this morning and she said that this light came on. She said that the truck lost power and shut off. She said she was stuck. I said ok I will be right down. When I got dressed and was ready to go see her, she then said that the truck started up and she drove to work. I went to her work and I drove the truck home. It drove home perfectly. I had no problems , and I even got on the freeway and got up 75 mph with no problems. Our truck has 74,000 miles on it and it is a 4x4 Lariat with the 5.4 motor. I did change the oil and air filter 2 days ago. I am lost on what to next? Please help me guys and give me any advice on the matter? Thank you

Mine did this a while back and the code said it was the throttle body. I had it cleaned and all is well now. Mine did it with 109,000 on it.

After I got it going again, I drove home, 200 miles before getting the TB cleaned. Sounds much the same.

Actually, what happens is the truck dies because the trottle body is dirty and not flowing properly. When this happens it triggers the throttle actuator motor to shut off. So, you can crank it up but it just idles, won't accelerate when you mash the throttle. You let it set for about 5 minutes and it resets, then you can go until it happens again. The danger is if the truck dies on you at the wrong time, you have no power brakes and no power steering. Not something you want to put off.

It happened with me when I was going about 35 in town, heavy traffic, getting ready to turn a corner. Was not fun.

You might try cleaning the MAF, if you haven't.

THank you for your answers. I called my ford dealer and they said that it is under warranty up to 75,000 miles. And it has 74,990 on the odometer right now. I can't even drive it to the dealer. I am going to have it towed to the dealer tomorrow. The Ford service guy said if it has 75001 miles on it then it is out of warranty.

I would get that taken care of sooner rather than later. As bluejay said, could be dangerous!!

I wouldn't even mess with a dealer that won't work with you on this. When you get it there, they will probably tell you that they can't duplicate the problem anyway and you will get nothing for your towing cost. With that attitude, they are trying to avoid doing anything involving warranty.

I really hate to get into the aftermarket intake and air filter debate again. But do you have an aftermarket intake or air filter that requires oiling? Many blame the exact problem your having with the oil type filters. I don't. I have seen to many vehicles with the exact problem with even less miles.

It's been my experience that what you are seeing is normal, even with a stock intake and is easily fixed with just a bit of time and spray cleaner. CRC makes a good one.

The dealer may save time by installing new parts for allot more money. If that fixes your problem, then great. If not, then just clean the parts yourself.

Do a google search of "How to clean a maf sensor" and you will find several videos of how to do it.

Hopefully the dealer will replace all parts and you won't have to worry about it for another 74,000 miles.

Good luck.

My truck is all stock. No after market intake or air filter that requires oil. I did have it towed and the dealer is the same place I bought the truck from when it was brand new. The service manager said it could be the throttle body? And they would check to make sure everything is up to date as far as the codes go. The button the moves the gas and brake pedal up and down doesn't work all the time, and the passenger front door powered electric window goes down but not up using the passenger door control but it will go up and down from the driver door control panel. All this is covered under my warranty. Whew I just made it with 10 miles to spare. Thank you everyone for your answers.

I got my truck back with everything fixed. The deductible was $100.00. They replaced the throttle body and put up to date codes back in.

Wow! Very good service, I'd say.
