question about tuners and transmissions

I heard a few days ago from someone that an edge tuner would "murder your transmission." Im considering getting either an edge or predator tuner. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and Welcome!

That would be a fairly bogus statement. With care, restraint and some common sense in adjusting transmission settings in the programmer, tuners generaally will not grenade a well-maintained, healthy tranny.

While it's your choice you may wish to consider going custom.

See linkies in my siggy for more info - including the 'tuners' tutorial by Sir Jack.

I have the new CS and have had 2 other brands prior, the Edge seems to shift the smoothest IMO. I would think it would be less harsh on the tranny than others.

That's because the tuning is incomplete - the 09+ canned calibrations do not alter tranny parameters - nor do they allow you to change any settings. Gp see fer yerself...

Yep - yer BONE STOCK TCM shift algorithms are smooth, aight - just the way Ford designed them

You need to wait for this to be addressed - allegedly they are "workin' on it" - we'll see. It's probably next in line after the FAR more important "Maintenance Manager" udates

This is discussed elsewhere on here, if you wanna go find it.

Here is one problem with with tuners, and I speak from what I've seen myself. Once some goof ball gets a tuner, he'll often fill up his tank with premium and set it to the performance setting. He then goes around town hot rodding and so forth having a grand 'ol time. When his tranny or engine goes, it can't be the truck, it was in perfect shape before...wait...the tuner! It couldn't be his heavy foot and inflated ego that caused the damage.

When used properly some parts of the truck, like the tranny, can actually last a bit longer due to firmer shifts that keep the clutches from sliding as long. It just depends on how you treat your vehicle.

Ever notice how you do something good, a few people hear about it but if you do something bad everyone knows about it? That is sometimes the case here.

MGDfan is right about the newer truck's TCMs not being supported by edge yet.

BUT, a custom tune does have a small degree of influence over the shifting firmness. By making more power at the crank the TCM has to firm up the shifts to handle it better.

Also, yet another BUT.
The OP looks like he's got an '06 so he doesn't have a TCM to worry about. He also has the option of any of the Edge, or my personal prefrence, PHP tuners. I would do some looking around on programmers to compare what you want to get out of it.

Here's a classic example of the 'Edge destroyed my put your drivetrain component of choice here' thread in the making...

http://www.f150forum.com/f4/edge-evo...-65340/index9/

(starts at post 88)

I have a 07 FX4 5.4L Flex Fuel, I usually run my chip on stage 2, but I want to "beef" up the performance. So I was wondering what settings I need to change when I get premium gas and change to stage 3 on the chip. I have read to change shift firmness and timing. But i dont know what to adjust them to. I want more performance, but I do not want to damage or stress my truck. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Ok thanks, I'll run a couple tanks and try it out. When you adjust the shift firmness will it make the transmission shift hard and give a slight jerk or what? I also have a CAI and exhaust on mine. By changing the timing, it will not damage anything will it? I have read that people have experienced a slight knocking when they adjusted the timing. And is there anyway to turn the torque control off or lower it? I want to lay some drag when I stomp the gas. And i'm having trouble doing that now when i'm pushing 35's.
I run my shift firmness at +20 it shifts hard but its not jerky. If you adjust the timing correctly you shouldn't damage it. Take it in small increments +.25 on up still you like it or you get the pinging and then turn it down. can't turnthe torque of but you can adjust it by the shift lock and unlock. Also helps if you run higher octane, maybe a regear to 4.10 will help you too.
ok man, thanks.. i'm looking forward to finding out. The fastest i have gotten is 7.51 secs, but that is only in stage 1 burning 87 octane and I have 35" tires. so i'm sure you'll be in the low 7's atleast.

Yes Shotgunz that's about the jist of it........

2 months later crying and cussing out the programmer for frying out the tranny in the transmission forum.......

6 months later complaining in the engine forum about a ping that just all of the sudden happened due to the programmer.....

No research on their part to confirm that anything that they do with the programmer or additional mods that are done will effect their truck......

Part of the problem is the commercial propaganda that we all see in adds, then we have to determine wether or not its fact or fiction.......

Life goes on.....
People will do damage to their vehicle.......
Weather they know it or not......

Ya know ignorance is bliss....
