programmers

I'm new to this site and haven't had much time to look around at other post to read up about programmers.. i was wondering what would be the best programmer for my f-150. I read a little bit up about the edge programmers but still didn't know what i should get. i also read on here about a php Gryphon. are those good? which one would work better? and one that isn't too pricey but also that works good.

I have the 5.4L V8 2002 Lariat f-150. It has tru dual 2 1/2 inch exhaust with two borla mufflers and 3 1/2 tips and a K&N cold air intake.

What do you want?
Take a look into that and that might be your answer.

Look at waiting times for custom tunes.

Look at options.

Look at reliability.

Look at customer service.

Look at price.

There are so many things that factor into what programmer to get.

Device and company links found in my Sig.

I've looked into most of those things and came to several different conclusions. I think I 've changed my mind a thousand times or more. i need to know deeper into it than what the description and brief info tells me. I've read customer reviews and they all kinda sound the same. and checked prices. I've looked the most at superchip and edge so far. it seems superchip has better prices and hp gain but idk if its really all what its worked up to be. And i've heard edge works better with ford so i wanted that but the hp gain was less and it was more. so i don't know..i'll look into it more but what would be the best suggestion?

For display/real time gauges: Gryphon with custom tunes or SCT Livewire with custom tunes.

No display/gauges: SCT XCAL3 with custom tunes.

ok lets say i go with the gryphon CS. and i get the custom tow and gas mileage to be 87 octane. will i have to do any other type of customs with my cold air intake and exhaust so they factor in or will it work automatically once i install the programmer?

Hey.

Honestly - have you read the 'stickies' yet?

https://www.f150online.com/forums/ch...unes-read.html

Post back on anything within that context still eluding you.

BTW - you do not have a 'Cold Air Intake' - you did, but you removed it to install the K&N 'Warm Air Intake'. You gained nothing but noise. Just FYI. Peruse the How-to/Tech articles section on this site - look for the Gotts mod - that thar be a low-cost mod to a standard OEM intake that not only breathes, but keeps IAT's in check.

The tuner person you choose will need to be informed about any/all current aftermarket mods so that he can construct the custom tunes accordingly. Nothing is 'automatic' (well, except yer tranny )

Good luck.

well i'll take a look at those "stickies" i just don't get a lot of time. and i know its not really a cold air intake because its open to the heat in the engine bay. if it was a tru cold air it would be in your wheel well i believe? but thats just what we call it where i'm from..and alright i'll try to figure this stuff out i don't know too much about programmers myself so any little info will help thanks.

Then, to be blunt, you probably need to leave your truck stock.

If you don't have the time to fully research (understand the how, what, why, pros, and cons of modifications) you really shouldn't mess with your stock intake or PCM program.

Even with the best tuner and custom tunes you have (at best) a 50-50 chance of increasing your MPG (as a direct result of the tuner). You might increase it because you change your driving style at the same time you add the tuner, but...

I'd say save your money and focus on maintenance.

i've done alot of maintenance on my vehicle i can't get much more better. so this is really the last step. if i could even get 1 or 2 miles to the gallon better that would be great. the horsepower is just extra to brag to my friends about..unless there is more maintenance that isn't common that i haven't thought of this is prolly all i got left

If you do see an increase, 1-2 MPG would be exceptional.

FWIW, I'm averaging 17.31 MPG (15,500 miles) and paying an average of $2.60 per gallon. This equates to $0.1501/mile.

If my MPG went up to 19.31 (which would be amazing), my cost per mile would drop to $0.1346/mile. So I'd save $0.0155/mile.

Not trying to discourage you from getting a tuner (I'm waiting for Edge/PHP to release the CTS), just want you to know what to expect.
