How many of the stickies have you read?

How many posts in this forum have you read?

Do you have any specific questions about a particular tuner?

It's great if you want to settle for canned tunes. Custom tunes are better and if you have a 2004 5.4 and intend to add a CAI you had better get custom tunes.

There are three websites for programmers and custom tunes.

Bluejay...not to jack this thread...but quick question. Can I run the Gryphon w/ a canned tune setting until I have the need for a custom tune? Right now, I don't think my mods require a custom tune...but I do want to add a CAI sometime in the near future, which I'm assuming WOULD require custom. What other mods require custom? Right now, I only have a K&N drop-in and Maggie catback SI/DO exhaust. I should be able to run canned with that, right? Hoping the Gryphon will support that so I can upgrade in the future if need be.

For the OP, I would HIGHLY suggest reading the sticky's at the top of this forum. Most of your questions will be answered there. Once you have read those, follow the links provided by 88Racing to see what options are out there. Let us know if you have questions.

Good morning Bigsur, sir!

BJ is busy spamming all the forums right now, after which he will require a nap, and then, of course, sustenance - usually junk food.

So if you'll allow me - you will be fine.

As for what requires custom - long-tubes, any sort of CAI that alters the MAF venturi geometry ( most full CAI's do), head work, cams, boost, larger injectors, TB's to support other power-adders, etc. A catback & a drop-in - no.

Cheers & Bests!

So the Gryphon is a better option IYO?

What other mods require custom other than a CAI?

Got the spamming done, thanks for filling in.

Yes, bigsur, you will be just fine. I was very happy with the canned tunes till I decided to bite the bullit and get the custom.

For clarification...per your signature, you have an Edge with custom tunes?

I thought the Edge Evo was incapable of custom programming....hence why most people go with the Gryphon if they want custom? Now I'm confused

Bill Cohran and his wife are PHP, that sells the Gryphon. Bill used to work for Edge and programmed their canned tunes. He left and started his own business and started writing custom tunes. There was a short window where he wrote some custom tunes for Edges, but Edge discovered they would lose their CART certification(California), if they allowed their product to be custom tuned. They asked him to cease and worked out a deal to sell him the hardware for the Gryphon. He still does work for Edge on a contract basis.

There were only a handfull of the Edges that got his custom tunes. So, I have an Edge with Gryphon custom tunes. I know of one more on the site, may be a couple more.

Just to muddy or clarify a little more. I ran the Edge canned tunes, level 3, for about 31,000 miles. I have run the custom tune for about 36,000, mostly 87 Performance tune. The custom tune are worth it even if you have no CAI. I have the modified stock intake. The Edge canned tunes are good, I kept level 2 for the little towing I do, but Bill tweaked the canned tunes for the Gryphon a little. I understand they are good. But, I get better performance out of the 87 Perf custom tune than I did out of level 3 on 93 octane. Primarily the downshifting. Power is about the same.
