Do I need a custom tow tune?

As soon as PHP is back from their medical emergency (Hope all is well) I'm going to upgrade my Edge to a Gryphon. I plan on getting the 87 performance custom tune - I'm running the Edge 93 perf tune right now on my 06 with Volant CAI and cat-back duals. Gas prices are getting back to where the higher octane price will make the custom tune worth it.

But, I also tow a 6x10 enclosed utility trailer with maybe 750lbs of weight in it maybe 20 times a year. Right now I just leave it in performance mode and GO! Should I also get a custom tow tune? Is the stock tow tune satisfactory? Do I even need to change - can I just operate in the 87 perf tune once I have it?

Thanks for the advice.

I am not an expert by any means, but Im going to assume that 750lbs is nothing for these trucks but since you hv a CAI, you may hv to get a tow tune. If i remember correctly, it was inadvisable to tow while having a performance tune loaded in the EDGE. I would assume it would be similiar for a Gryphon

First, the Level 2 tow tune should be adequate for that, no need for a custom tow tune, though it would be a little better. Second, NEVER tow on Level 3, if that is what you are doing. You can damage the transmission. You need the low end torque for towing. Why risk it when it takes about 10 seconds to reprogram?

It's 750 lbs in a 6X10 enclosed utility trailer, the trailer weighs that much or more again, plus he's pulling the windage.

To the OP:
You need to figure out your total combined weight of the trailer and payload.
Edge/Gryphon performance tunes are only rated up to 2500 lbs for towing.
The edge towing tune would be better.

I'll check empty weight of the trailer though I doubt combined weight will top 2500lbs. Good news is the PHP folks are back. Bad news is I still probably need to wait a week or two for them to get caught up.

Sounds to me as if I can probably get by with just the one custom tune - the 87 performance, and use the standard towing tune?
