Need help!

I just bought a used 2006 F150 supercrew 4X4 & am not happy with my fuel mileage. It has the 5.4 & is all stock. I know someone who has a DiabloSport Predator Tuner - U7151 - should I buy it from him or would I be wasting my money. I would appreciate any info.

You MIGHT see a mileage improvement, but I'd consider an Edge/Gryphon or an SF3/X3 instead.

What are the advantages of an Edge/Gryphon or an SF3/X3?

They have lots of happy users on this forum. The Predator, not so much. *shrug* (You can be the "test case" though).

Please read the sticky, "Questions About Tunes", near the top of this forum.

I have a diablosport predator, and I'm not happy with it. But then again, my truck isn't stock. I'm getting it custom tuned on a Dyno when I get home, and hopefully I'll be more impressed with the predator then, if not, I'm moving to the Gryphon.

What are you not happy with? I'm looking for the least expensive way to get better fuel mileage but I don't want to mess the truck up. I have never had a vehicle with a programmer & am a little scared. If I like the effects I will probably build off of that.

Again, it's much more a function of the talent and experience of the fellow who's writing the tunes that's key.

A Predator, in stock 'canned tune' form, appears to lag behind the others in tuning effectiveness - much like Jet - where they twiddled some WOT setings, a couple shift parameters and called it a day. Hardly comprehensive, or optimal.

You should be aware that, unlike almost any other platform, these trucks have hundreds of PCM revisions, they change each model year, and are revised over time - so to provide a really spot-on, effective "one-size-fits-all' tune is challenging to say the least. Thus, they tend not to be that in-depth, generally. Hence the benefit of custom tuning, where the strategy is written specific for that vehicle - and, happily based upon the specific needs / desires of the customer ( e.g towing, race, economy, octanes, shift feel, etc, etc).

All the devices able to be used in custom tuning at their core are just delivery vehicles for the tune files themselves. It's the wizard at the key board that is the differentiating factor, by far.

If you peruse the Lightning forum, you'll find several hugely impressive L's running custom Diablosport tuning. The same holds tru for SCT, and perhaps a couple others.

So - in closing, there *should* be no reason that, given access to an appropriately skilled tuning person, using Diablo technology, a decent tune cannot be supplied for your truck.

A side note - tuning trucks is somewhat different than tuning Mustangs, so be mindful of that. You do not want: "Hey Buford, move over an lemme try, ah ain't never did whun 'o dem fancy one-fiddy's befer... have Cletus clean the crapper fer once"

Good luck - LOTS to read and absorb here

I didn't see any gain in performance really. The shifts are nice but that's about it. So once I get the cutom tune I'll probably love it. But like the guy above me said, when you get into custom tuning, it's not so much as the programmer used, it's the guy making the tunes that really gets the job done.

Excuse me folks, this is on the same line of question i have! I have an 07' KR Flex fuel 5.4, and on doing some research i have been finding mixed revue on the tuning of these engines. I have not yet purchased a programmer as of yet, until i am more comfortable with positive reviews for this particular application. So far i have seen that the "gryphon" has the most happy followers, so if you pros out there could give me some insite i would appreciate it !!!!! By the way, i have already installed a K&N intake and a Jet flow sincer. I plan on also installing perfomace exhaust..........Thanks ......Pierre ......

I'm not really sure ablout flex fuel vehicles, but I know with an intake and a new MAF(assuming that's what you mean by flow sensor) you're going to need a custom tune for the engine to run right. Someone correect me if I'm wrong about this on flex fuel engines.

This is usually an issue only in 2004 and 2005 5.4L engines. In 2006, the 5.4L no longer runs in a near-lean condition from the factory, so adding a CAI, though still not as beneficial as the CAI manufacturer will lead you to believe, is not as potentially damaging as on a 2004 or 2005.

I decided against the diablo after researching more on this site. I am working on a deal right now on purchasing a used edge evo. I see some people say edge gryphon. I'm not having any luck finding info on this. What is a gryphon?
