Edge and Transmission Problem
Edge and Transmission Problem
I have a 2000 Expedition 4x4 5.4 with 132,000 miles. I installed and edge several years ago and it has been working fine. Programed for high performance with a transmission firmness change, 1st to 2nd setting 7, 2nd to 3rd setting 5 and the same for 3rd to 4th. On my Elk hunt i was pulling a 7x14 cargo trailer. The trans was dumping while under a load. I just had trans serviced before I left. I left the trailer at a friends house and drove home without it. Trans bumping while under a load. I have been using these setting for over two years. When home I put stock program back in. No trans problem. I then reprogramed to level three but did not change the trans firmness setting. No problem. Is this an early warning my trans needs a rebuild??

+1 DO NOT tow in level 3. Says not to right in your edge owners manual.
Thanks for your responses. When I first recieved the edge I called Edge and told them I was programed in setting two but was using 91 octane and dumped the timming accordingly and changed the transmission setting. I asked how far off was I to the #3 setting and he said not far off. He said they where more concerned about people starting to fast from a stop and damaging the transmission. It was pointed out in the old days when you cammed and carbed an engine you are basicly doing the same thing. I do understand the O\D searching but this is not what was happening and when I dropped the trailer it was still doing it. The trans even when it was bumping was shifting firm and quick. I even considered it could be the all wheel drive transfer case (I do not have a 2wd setting).

If so, there are changes in Level three that go beyond simple things like timing and fueling. There are adjustments to line pressure, torque reduction and clutch release/engagement times. These adjustments can put stress on the transmission if you tow with the vehicle.

I did reprogramed with level 2 and have not had the problem return. I did program a level 2 with 91 octane and advanced the timing per the manual. I think my programer needed to be restored to stock then reprogramed as I was having a hard time starting the vehicle at times. This too has gone away. I have had some electrical problems(shorts) and I think this my have messed up the programing. I have not tried to pull the trailer yet but tonight I am going to drive a 6% upgrade on the interstate to try it out.
