all in one tune?

i am still debating on if i am going to get a tuner. it would be between troyer and php. i dont want 3 tunes, i would want one all around tune, sotr of like a jack of all trades. good at everything great at nothing. would this be a good idea? and how feasable is this? i rarely tow with the truck thats why i dont want different tunes. suggestions?

If yyou order a Gryphon, it comes with 3 canned tunes, one of which is a towing tune. You could keep that tune and then get a custom 87 Performance tune. Not sure this can be done with the Xcal3 or not.

I kept the canned towing tune for the little towing I do, and got an 87 Perf and a 93 Perf.

You can do light towing with a performance/efficiency tune, but for any major towing, you get more low end torque and it is easier on the transmission to have a towing tune. Since the tuner can hold multiple tunes, just makes sense to have al least two tunes. At least to me. Takes about 30 seconds to change tunes.

The whole point of a tune it to get as much as of the truck as possible without compromising integrity or putting the truck in a spot where it will be under greater stress than safely allowed. If you want a tune you can run every day with a few expectations, like towing a boat or more than an empty trailer, then I would recommend an 87 performance tune. Having the ability to change tunes will not hinder the use of one tune the majority of the time. The best canned tune IMO for all-around driving is the towing tune because you run 87 octane and can tow without changing the tune, but once you have tried the 93 performance tune and get a real taste of what the programmer does for your truck, you won’t mind at all running a performance tune (93 canned, 93 custom, or 87 custom) and swapping to a tow tune if you need to tow on a rare occasion. Heck depending on what the gas prices are I reprogram my truck at the pump while getting gas. It is not a real hassle at all to switch, but also not something you would want to do at a traffic light.

It sounds to me like what you're looking for is actually a performance tune. However, it's probably worth contacting Bill and/or Mike and discussing more specifically what you want out of the tune(s). They could then give you a better idea of what you should get. From what I have heard from both of these guys, neither one will try to up-sell you.

I worked with Justin at VMP for the type of all around tune you are asking about. I wanted a performance feel tune but still wanted to be capable of pulling my boat without worrying about contantly switching tunes. We started with his 87 towing tune and made some slight adjustments to fit exactly what I wanted. Plus the wait and customer service for VMP is outstanding.

the point of a towing tune is low end torque and shift characteristics-in proper tow tune -the 87 tow tune will not match 93 in this regard,[torque] -adding extra fuel in a tow tune -[keeping cylinder temps down], will take away a bit of power a leaner performance tune provides...sounds like you want your cake and eat it too...

It's the classic "two choice dilemma". Sorry, though. Engineering laws say you're going to get a "compromise" if you go this route. This compromise may suit you just fine, but it will not be the best at EVERYTHING.

Think about it - if it were possible, ALL the tuners would be offering it!
