Best "canned" tunes?

Not looking to do any mods, but would like firmer shifting (this thing shifts like a pig) along with a tow and performance (and hopefully economy) settings. Any thoughts? I know 99.9% go with custom tunes due to a CAI etc. I believe stock tire size is 265/70/18 and I've got 270/70/18 as I recall and don't plan on going any bigger.

I love the edge, and highly recommend it It also depends on if you like the guages/visibility of the edge or prefer the invisibility of the handhelds such as the SCT stuff that you plug in to tune and unplug and take away until you need it again.

My vote goes for the edge though, you will love the gauges and I think their tunes are excellent for being canned. I never had one problem with the tunes, and when I did have a problem with the unit (it was my screw up between update software's) I fried it by using the wrong software system for an update... they fixed it by overnighting me a new unit free of charge even though I was well out of the warranty period In short their customer service after sale is top notch.

A "custom tuned" Xcal3 from VMP Tuning is $400 with three custom tunes. It's not that much more than a canned tuner and it'll be leaps and bounds better, IMO.

What would custom 'look" like if I am running a stock truck vs. going with canned, meaning what are the advantages?

A custom tune from a reputable tuner is going to make more power and have much better driveabilty than a canned tune.

I ran the canned tunes for 31,000 miles and now have run custom tunes for about 32,000. I had to run Level 3 in the Edge, with 93 octane to get what I wanted out of the tuner. With the custom tune from PHP, I have about the same power as the level 3 and much better downshifting. This is on an 87 Performance tune. If I lost my unit today, I would be ordering a Gryphon with custom tunes. Custom tunes are worth every penny, even on a stock truck like mine.

Sounds like custom is the way to go. I see a vote for the Xcal3 from VMP tuning and a vote for the Gryphon. Is there a difference and where would I go for the Gryphon? What is specific to this truck to make custom tunes, meaning what info is needed vs. buying canned?

They have to know your HEX code. If you do not know it already, they will send you the unit and it does a reading for you, then they can write the tunes. They also need to know any mods you want programming for.

The main difference in hardware is the gauges that the Gryphon provades on it's monitor. The Xcal3, you download and put the hardware away. The only place to get a Gryphon is from www.powerhungryperformance.com. If you decide on an Xcal3, it is a decision on who you want writing your tunes. They are all good, PHP, Troyer or VMP.
