Anything is better than a Super-Chips programmer, except Hypertech.

Well there are other custom tuning companies out there, Power Hungry Performance, VMP. I've never dealt with Troyer, so maybe some one will chime in on their experiences with them, but I'm positive that you can keep your canned tunes and switch freely between those and the custom tunes.

Gryphon and xcal3 programmers are the same type of format when storing tunes.

You pick the canned ones to get replaced by the customs. Once that is done its done unless you put the canned tunes back in and eliminate the customs.

With the gryphon or xcal3 you'll never have more than 4 tunes in your truck(stock being 1 of them). The 3 in the tuner and 1 in the pcm.

No there are 4 slots in the gryphon and xcal3. 1 slot is always dedicated to your stock program. That's where the stock one goes when the canned or custom is loaded into the pcm.
The other 3 slots you can choose what you want, this happens when you order.

Take for example the gryphon. Canned tunes.

1 canned tranny only
2 canned tow
3 canned performance

Say you order 2 customs. You order a 87 perf and a 91 perf. Then you think I still tow a little bit so the canned one was good enough. The only reason I put 91 perf in is that 93 isn't sold in my area.

So now your slots look like this.

1 87 perf custom
2 canned tow
3 91 perf custom

So you changed out the canned tranny tune and the canned performance tune. But you still have the canned tow tune.

Or you can keep slots 2+3 and just change slot 1 with a custom or do all 3. Its your choice. Just remember each custom tune cost some $$.

Right on!
The generic canned tunes cover all the stock trucks. But when you have customs done they are tailored to your truck's HEX code and how you drive and what mods you have done.

Roughly about $400 for a Xcal3 with three custom tunes from a place like VMP Tuning.
