WOT Fuel - Edge Level 2 Question
WOT Fuel - Edge Level 2 Question
OK gang, I searched around, and I know the last thing we need is another thread on Edge Evo settings, CAI's causing a lean condition, etc.
But...
What effect does the WOT Fuel setting in the Edge have on combating the issue that pops up on every single CAI thread about the 3 valve 5.4's running lean?
I wont argue that custom Gryphon tunes are ideally the way to go. Just curious if anyone has had any dyno proven results on A/F ratios with adjusting the WOT Fuel settings on their Edge.
I have a 2007 Screw with the 5.4, and really dont plan on doing a full CAI upgrade, just the Gotts. But the curiosity has my interest peaked, as I cant find a lot of proven results on adjusting that WOT Fuel setting.
Thanks!

The "proven results" for me was way back there when Troyer issued the statement that 04s and 05s came from the factory in a near lean condition. Bill at PHP later on(when he came on the scene) verified that info. It has also been stated that it was generally corrected for 06s and up but that there may be an occasional truck with the problem. Also, there have been enough 2004-2005 owners post, that were having issues to validate that it is real.
My feeling is why risk it on any year for the 5 or so HP you get with a CAI when you do not have a custom tune to take advantage of it?

It's OK, I asked the same question on PHP's forum a short time back. This was Bill Cohron's reply:
"The WOT multiplier controls how far the fuel adjustment can go in order to achieve desired AFR for peak torque. This is more of a limiter in the sense that it won't allow any fuel adjustment beyond a certain point. Outside of that, the main fuel tables are what offer final adjustment of open loop fuel while the MAF sensor provides the air mass values to the PCM so the PCM can have a base to maintain the target AFR of 14.64:1 in closed loop. Short and long term fuel trims take care of everything else."
It's a little hard to see the answer in this, but basically, Open Loop is the real problem and you can get Open Loop under several conditions, not just at WOT. The WOT multiplier simply sets a limit on max fuel input at WOT.
So, anytime you're in Open Loop, you're probably lean because the fuel tables were not written to account for the CAI. A custom tune rewrites those fuel tables.

In my short time on the F150online forum, you guys have been the best. :-) I was just curious really. I doubt I'd put the new gal at risk for a few HP. The Edge Evo was enough to satisfy me for now (until the Gryphon bug hits me). haha
Thanks!
Thanks!
The Gotts mod doesn't make a difference at running these trucks leaner it only allows more air in at higher rpms because of a cleaner path. The leaner condition is added to when taking off the original filter box and replacing it with a tube and relocating both the maf and filter. The bigger the cai tube the leaner the motor will run without custom tunes to compensate.
So anyone with a 5.4L 06-08 should not have problems with the gotts mod.
Now for 5.4L 04-05 they run so close to lean I would recomend customs.

Once the new wears off my Evo, and the PHP guys get back to full strength, I'll be updating it to a Gryphon for sure.
