Gryphon octane question.

I'm currently useing my gryphon with canned tunes on level 2 useing 89 octane. I've actually noticed alittle more performance from useing 89 over 87. My question is, I ordered 87 Performance tune..When i get my tune can i continue to use 89 octane without any issues? and would there be any benefits like with the canned tunes useing 89 or am i just wasteing my $? damaging my engine? should only use 87 octane? etc..I appreciate all opinions. Ty for all replys..

I think I read in the directions that using the canned #2 (towing) tune, you may see an improvement in mileage and performance with higher octane - probably allows the system to advance the timing a bit more? I have never heard of a vehicle being damaged in any way by using a higher octane than required. Mostly its a waste of money if the vehicle doesn't have the compression or tuning to benefit from the higher octane fuels.

dlsipe1 is correct. If you are using a canned 87 octane tune, try advancing the timing +1 degrees to take advantage of the anti-knock properties of 89 octane.

But, if you ALWAYS use 89 octane, and if you are getting custom tunes, have Bill write the custom tunes for 89 octane! There's more to it than just the timing advance. There's a whole new complicated fuel map for the higher octane stuff and a bunch of other things I don't understand.

You are not going to damage your engine using 89. But, make sure the tune takes advantage of the "features" it offers.

I watched Bill write the code for my Expy, and man, there is ALOT of work just for 1 tune. He also told me it won't hurt anything to run a higher octane for the tune. I ran a tank of Shell 93, and a couple tanks of 89 after I got my 87 performance tune, I had put some Chevron 89 on the way up to PHP and it gave me some real bad knock/ping.

You should always run the octane your tune is setup for, any higher is a waste and can even leave deposits in the engine. If you are using a tuner that allows you to adjust the timing, it's fine to run a higher octane as long as you bump the timing up accordingly.

Thank you guys for all your great advice.. I guess when i get my tune i will only use 87octane. I dont wanna go into my custom option to make changes, id rather leave things alone esp after getting my tune. It wasnt that i was set on usieng 89 forever. Im just useing it with my canned tunes on level 2 for now and since it said going from 87-89 higher octane may improve performane i thought maybe the same goes for the 87 performance tune by useing 89. Hope that makes sence. Just like in the gryphon manual it says- Trans-85-87 octane, Tow- 87-89, 91 performance- 91-93. I figured +2 octane wouldnt hurt and maybe be a benefit but i guess im wrong.. TY all..

I understand your thinking, but when they say Performance 91-93, on the canned tune, they also tell you that it is programmed for 91 and if you run 93, you need to bump the timing +1. I did that for about 31,000 miles with my Edge. When I got the custom tunes, I got an 87 Perf and a 93 Perf. I now run the 87 Perf almost exclusively and on 87. Decide what octane you would rather buy and get custom tunes written for that. One other thing, to me, it's very important to run a good quality gas with a detergent. Around here, that is Shell, Texaco, Chevron and Conoco.
