So when I order my tuner I can just tell him to put the 89 tow, 89 perf, and 89 mileage on it. Does this cost extra? What does it normally come with? I have heard of some other tunes like 91 perf. Other than the octane what is the difference?

They will write the timing range to fit whatever octane you intend to purchase. Any tune, including the stock one currently running your truck is written for a specific octane. The stock is 87. I have an 87 Perf tune and a 93 Perf tune, and an 87 tow tune.

If the stock is 87 would I see a difference if I got a 87 mileage, 87 perf, and 87 tow tunes programmed on my truck or is that the same as stock. I mostly run 87 octane in my truck now. If this is not the same as stock would it be worth it to buy it just for the 87 tunes? Once again thanks for all the advice and information, I am still learning about programmers.

There is so much difference between the 87 stock tune and an 87 Perf, you would not believe. You have to experience it for yourself. About 25 more horse power, more torque and the a huge difference in shifting. But the biggest difference is in downshifting. The performance tune will downshift at about any speed. Why Ford puts these out so detuned I will never understand.

It is my understanding that there is very little difference in the economy tune and the performance tune, as to get performance, you are attempting to make the engine operate more efficiently in the first place.

^^

Go for a higher octane unless you're against paying more for gas =p

Well, only if you are trying to get everything the engine can do. For my everyday driving, the 87 Perf does just great. It is VERY responsive and gives me the kick in the britches when I want it. The 93 is a little more so and I have it if I want that little extra. I just seldom feel the need. You would be amazed at what the 87 Perf will do. I have about 25,000 miles running it. I'm an old drag racer, so I do like to feel the horses from time to time.

Not to hijack the thread but I was wondering will it make a big difference in the 5.4 also. I have been waiting to purchase one due to not wanting to void my warranty, but after talkn to several techs at my local ford dealer they told me that they are not voiding warranties for programmers. Also Ive seen several comments about the cai making the trucks run lean. Is this always the case without the programmer? Plus are the cai really worth it even after a programmer?

It makes more of a difference on the 5.4L, IMO. I'd highly recommend getting a cai and a custom tuned Xcal3 from VMP Tuning at the same time so you can have your custom tunes made for your truck and mods. It made a huge difference in my truck. Justin took about two weeks to get my truck tuned which is a lot better than waiting 12+ weeks for some of the other guys. I couldn't be happier with the tunes. My truck is a beast now !!

Although I got a CAI also, and while I was switching out to my CAI I noticed my stock intake had a mouse nest inside of the fender blocking the intake completely haha.

Overall I love my truck all over again after going from stock to my tunes, I run 89 Miles alot, but when Im feeling good and just got a full tank of gas, I change it to Perf for fun =D

I dont know if you'd prefer higher octane though, the 89 has done it for me though.
haha A MOUSE nest?? haha thats just random imagine how bad it would be to know you had a dead mouse in your intake

You really need to do some reading in the tuner forum. The Edge and Gryphon are the same hardware, with a monitor, but the Gryphon offers custom tuning that goes beyond the canned tunes of the Edge. The Gryphon is sold and tuned by PHP. There are two super star tuners of the Xcal3. Troyer Performance and VMP. You can't go wrong with any of these products , nor with any of the companies. You just need to decide what you want from a tuner and go for it. They really put fun into driving these trucks.
