Canned tune or wait for Troyer
Not everyone. There have been some that had problems and went elsewhere. The same can be said for all three, VMP, Troyer, and PHP. They all have good reputations and work at customer service, but none are perfect.

Tuning these trucks is altogether different from tuning a Mustang. About the only thing in common is the name Ford. Justin started as a Mustang tuner, but has done enough trucks that I would not be concerned about his ability for tuning my truck. However, Troyer and Bill have focused on the trucks for their careers and made the trucks their specialty. I would prefer a tune from them, but, I would not hesitate to run a VMP tune if it were offered. But, I would go nowhere else but one of those three. That is my take on it, my opinion.

Thats great Nvrenuff, always good to hear about great customer service and seeing the return on a decent chunk of cash in a timely manner.
What size engine do ya have for your 04? I have a dinky 4.6 it made a HUGEEEEE difference for me when I received my tunes haha, just wish I had found a 5.4 for the same price I snagged this truck for.

Never meant to start any sort of pissing match over who is the better tuner. As a matter of fact, I gave Troyer 17weeks of patience, was willing to pay MUCH more for his tunes given his F150 experience, and got crappy service in the form of them (not Mike, but another employee) not returning phone calls to even give me an estimate as too how much longer I could expect to wait (I still haven't got a call BTW). If they do call, I may just order a tune and compare the two although I can't imagine what more I could expect over what I already have from Justin.
The tuners that are continually discussed here are all very talented. I don't use any of the three, but wouldn't hesitate to, if necessary.
For clarification, every tune begins with the vehicle's Ford base tune per the pcm's strategy, and is modified and scaled to each vehicle's particular needs and fuel use by the tuner. No tuner actually starts from scratch and writes a brand new tune, but rather "updates" the factory tune to a particular set of adjustments per the info from the customer.
I would think that a busy tuner would be able to virtually template many of the most common strategies after tuning a few of them. Think about that data base! It follows that if you datalog correctly and supply the data to your tuner for retune, that would be a better tune.

Not to mention, I'd imagine it's a lot harder to tune a twin turbo 5.4L 4V than a 5.4L 3V with a cai ...
Cool! Lets put that in my truck! You won't be able to wipe the
off my face.
Hey guys, I was not trying to start an arguement about who has the better tunes, and frankly I've already made my decision to go with Troyer.
The question was surrounding the CAI from Airaid and the canned tune from the X3. Not who does better custom work.

The answer is: Do not use the canned tunes on your 04 with any CAI. Canned tunes are for stock trucks.
