About to order Gryphon!!!
Hey guys im about to order a Gryphon and I was just wondering what custom tunes you guys think I should get? Let me know what you guys are running and how you like them. I tow on occasion and love a lot of power every once and a while, other then that i drive pretty normal i would say. Any way let me know what you guys think before i order this thing! Thanks in advance!

Thats what i was thinking about getting from the start but was just currious of other peoples opinions. I tow maybe once a month maybe more it just depends. Should i still just get the tow tune anyway, I don't want to be kicking myself in the but later for not getting the tow tune.

IF you tow anything over about 2500#, you DO want a towing tune. That's about the "breakpoint". Then, when you're NOT towing, if you want to be economical, get the 87 non-towing tune. Since you feel "frisky" once in a while, you'll have to have a 91+ performance tune I guess.

Thanks Jack. When i do tow the trailer alone is about 2500lbs plus 4 quads.(Day trips to dumont). So do you think the tow tune will be worth it? I saw in post somewhere that someone was saying 91 octane isn't to good for our trucks. (04-08) Correct me if im wrong but that seems weird to me.
Our trucks are designed to burn 87 octane. To use 91 efficiently, they'd have to have a higher compression ratio. We CAN get better performance out of 91, with a 91 octane tune, since the burn rate is more "controlled", but it's not going to be as good as if the engine were optimized for this stuff. The 91 octane tune resets the spark advance, the A/F ratio, the shift points, and so on, but it cannot do anything about the compression ratio!
Is a tow tune worth it? You bet! Especially in your case, which sounds like 2500# + the weight of the quads - maybe about 3500+#? Make sure Bill knows what the actual weight you are towing is. The canned tune was designed for tow weights in the 5000#+ region. You need a different tune, just like I did. I got an increase of at least 0.5 mpg using my custom tow tune over the canned tow tune (and better performance).

OK - don't misunderstand. That could have been me talking about 91 octane gas.

Ok thanks Jack. So the 91 octane will be ok with my truck with the custom tune right? Yea I will let Bill know the weight of what I tow. Thanks for all your help Jack I really appreciat it! So and 87 performance, 87 tow, and 91 performance should do me good right? Thanks again!

That's what I went with.
Just remember list everything out so Bill has a good idea what you are doing. Like approx elevations and towing weights.

88racing's answer and advice was correct.
IF you were to ALWAYS use 91 octane gas, you could have the tow tune written for that octane. There's nothing wrong with 91 and towing, it's just that you don't want to pull considerable weight with a "performance" tune, because the shift and fueling strategies are not set up properly for that task.
I've simply chosen to NEVER use 91 octane gas, so I left the 91+ octane performance tune alone (it is not a custom tune), and, I've never used it.

Thanks again!!!
It's been a pretty cool addition so far. That guy named Jack has taught me a lot by reading his posts over on php's forum. Gotta good grasp on the canned tunes so far but no customs yet.
