Difference between Gryphon and Edge?

Ok I understand they are basically the same thing except the Gryphon can be custom tuned. My question is are the canned tunes that come with both the Gryphon and the Edge the same or is Gryphon's canned tunes a step above? Been trying to decide which way to go I'm just not sure what I want as far as improvement? Maybe canned would be enough? Thanks!

If you do enough research around here you will see that the Gryphon is way better in terms of customization. The only differences I know of is the Edge is Grey and the Gryphon is Black and the canned tunes are exactly the same.

If you ever plan on modding your 05 truck though, you will want custom tunes. Intakes on our trucks require custom tuning to function correctly and not make the motor run lean. The Edge will not compensate for this.

There are countless threads out there about this exact subject though. I can think of 4 or 5 just in the last few days. I'd look and search around a bit more, but as far as I know, those are the only differences.

Thanks TJ. I've read alot on them in here already. That was the only question I had that I couldn't find an answer to. I didn't want to bother the folks at PHP with and email they seem to be very busy already. Knew someone in here would know!

The canned tunes for both are the same. Same guy wrote them. But, I highly encourage you to get the Gryphon. Use the canned tunes for awhile and then get the custom tunes. By then, you will know how you want it tweaked and I can't emphasize enough how much better the custom tunes are. I put 31,000 on level 3 and 93 octane, with the Edge and have put 22,000 on a custom 87 Perf tune. The 87 Perf has the power of level 3 but has much better downshifting characteristics. Plus, you will need the custom tune to take advantage of a CAI or even the intake mod in our How Tos.

I got the 87 Perf and the 93 Perf custom tunes and only occasionally run the 93, so the savings in cost of gas paid for my custom tunes in about 6 months.

Yeah Bluejay that was kinda what I was thinking. Just wasn't sure if I would want custom tunes or not? Only mod to my truck is the DIY intake on here. I am about to swap out the muffler to a magnaflow though. That will probably be it for me so I didn't know if custom would be a huge difference or not? At this point I'm leaning towards the Gryphon. Thanks for your help!

My truck was stock except for the exhaust, which really does not contsitute an engine mod.

Bill used to work for Edge and still does contract work for them, so he knows what was left on the table with the canned tunes. He went on his own and started custom tuning Edges but for Edge to keep their CARB certificate, they could not allow custom tuning. So, they worked out an agreement where he buys the units from them, repackages it as a Gryphon and then can custom tune it.

What happens when you sell a used Gryphon, that it is custom tuned to your truck?

You can return the tune on your truck to stock, which resets the Gryphon, and then you can update the "calibration" file in the Gryphon, which will return its tunes to the canned versions.

It is VERY unlikely that a custom tuned Gryphon would work on anyone else's truck.

I believe the answer is YES to this question, but, I think to be safe, you should direct this question to www.PHPTune.com. They should have a record of the serial number of the unit and should be able to determine of it can be tuned.
