Do I need a custom tune?

I know there are a thousand posts on this, but i didn't want to hijack someones thread. I have a 2004 supercrew 4x4 with the 5.4L3V. The first thing I did when I bought the truck was buy an Edge Evo and a K&N filter. Both made a huge difference in my opinion. Now it seems everything I do has taken away from my performance. My next mod was the Gibson Supertruck exhaust. I liked the sound and that it was a unique look, but I lost low end torque.

Next I purchased the Troyer dual 16" fans. To be honest, I saw little gains in power or fuel milage. Then I ordered the AF1 from troyer. It looks great, but it is really loud and my mpg when in the ****ter. I replaced my spark plugs with motorcraft plugs thinking they were going, no change. Next I bought the Troyer underdrive pulleys . Again, no noticeable difference in power or mpg. I just dropped some more cash on a new Corsa cat back system and I am happy with the look and sound, but again no change in performance.

I am running the edge on the performance setting and I run 92 octane from Speedway. I WANT MY TORQUE BACK!!! Someone please give me advice on where to go from here. My next purchase will be the dynatech longtube header/highflow cat setup.

BTW my truck has 115k miles.

Thanks in advance

First, the canned tune, level 3 does of less torque at low end but more through a wide band. It pulls harder on the top end. Level 2 provides a lot of torque on the low end but fades rapidly over 2000 rpms.

Secondly, you really are not making use of the CAI and some of your other mods, as Edge's canned tunes are written for a stock engine. A custom tune will rectify that.

Thirdly, take it from one that ran 30,000 miles on Edge's level 3 and now has almost as many miles on PHP's custom tune, the custom tune is worth it, even on a near stock engine. You will be much happier with a custom tune.

You need to use gas with a good detergent. Shell, Texaco, Chevron, Conoco and Phillips 66 are a few. No Exxon/Mobil.

If you have a edge revolution - are you able to load a custom tune into it to benefit from a CAI? I keep hearing custom tunes and thats the only way to maximize your potential with these mods? But since i have the edge is it capable of doing custom tunes or do i need a different tuner?

So i think i found my answer

What is the difference between an Evolution and a Gryphon?

There are really only two differences between the Evolution and the Gryphon. Aesthetically, the Evolution programmer is silver, and the Gryphon is black. We do this to differentiate between the Evolution and the Gryphon and protect Edge's CARB certification.

The Gryphon is an ideal programmer for those customers who like what the Evolution has to offer - gauges, diagnostics, dash mounted pod - but have made modifications to their vehicles which require custom tuning. The Evolution cannot be custom tuned; the Gryphon can.
What can I do if I already own an Evolution but am having driveability issues due to the modifications I've made on
my vehicle?

The Edge Evolution cannot be custom tuned. However, we offer an upgrade for those customers who need custom tuning. The cost to upgrade the Evolution to a Gryphon is $35 + shipping, which includes re-casing the programmer and updating the firmware. Each custom file is $50. Turnaround time on shipping the programmer back out to you is about 2-4 days; at this time, custom files take 4-6 weeks. Custom calibrations are downloaded and installed using our Pegasus Update Software.

So i have to send my unit into them to convert it to a Gryphon and then i can add tunes to it....hmmm not a bad idea since i got the Edge for 275

Nice bit of research, way2qk! I'll add to what you said.

The Edge has canned tunes in it that the engineers at Edge figured would work for the majority of drivers with stock trucks. This does not take into account those that, say, live in the "frozen north" or, like me, live in the "roasting desert". It does not work the best for people living up in the high country, around Denver or Colorado Springs who like to take their vehicles up over the big passes. It doesn't even really work right for the onse living on the coast, at sea level. If you pull a trailer, what kind of trailer is it? Is it the one the Edge engineers imagined, or is it something else? If your goals are fuel economy instead of blazing acceleration off the green light, what do the canned tunes do for you (in either case)? If you want real "passing power" in the 60-70mph range, does the canned tune give it to you?

Custom tunes can take YOUR needs into consideration and will make YOUR driving experience much more enjoyable!

And, working with Bill Cohron at www.PHPTune.com is a pure pleasure!

Hey thanks for the information- stumbling upon phptune to find my answers out- i just signed up on the forum there and really excited to put custom tunes in my truck. I was unsure what to buy in the beginning and am glad i got the edge since it is able to be converted. I totally understand now canned tunes and the difference why it doesnt really totally customize to my specific surroundings or environment.

Ive learned so much in the last hour about custom tunes and CAI lol. Im still up in the air on CAI?

I also dont want to hi-jack this thread - i just had a question and you answered it perfectly.

Have a peek at the "Gotts Mod" thread: http://dygytalworld.ehost-services13...read.php?t=340 in that forum, way2qk. It might answer some of your questions about CAIs.

But, then, we're still waiting on an objective "flow test" of the things, so, who knows?
