Gryphon question regarding MPG

I've had my Gryphon for a couple hundred miles now and it seems that my MPG read out changes way to much for it to be an average reading. Does this thing take a certain amount of miles into account for it's calculations or what?

I never figured out how those calculation were being made, so I quit using it. I don't think it is close to accurate. I track my gas usage on a spreadsheet. That tells me what I want to know.

Or what you'd rather not know

Yep. Over the 3 1/2 years, I've learned where I don't want to buy gas, and what the mods cost me in mpg as well as what the 10% ethanol cost me. I learned that I could run Level 3 at no extra net cost for the 93 when I had the Edge tunes. I also lrearned that my truck gets pretty good mileage for a big ole Screw, driving it the way I do.

Do you mind sharing what you've learned using the spreadsheets?

It kinda makes me mad becuase I really wanted to be able to keep up with my mpg, one major reason I choose the Gryphon.

Ok. First, you have to compare weather condition, driving conditions, wind, if it's a trip, ect. Taking those things into consideration:

!. Got 16.5 to 17 around the Metroplex. I live in the country and commute into Fort Worth/Grand Prairie.

2. Got around 19.2 on the highway driving 75 to 85.

3. I would get about 1/2 mpg less out of Exxon compared to Shell, Texaco, or Conoco.

4. I would get about 11% better on Level 3 of the Edge with 93, compared to Level 2 with 87.

5. 10% ethanol cost me about 10% loss in mpg.

6. When I went to 265/65/17s from 245/65/17s I lost about 1/2 mpg

7. When I went from 265/65/17 to 305/50/20, I lost an additional 1 mpg

8. With Bill's custom 87 performance tune, I get about the same as with his 93 performance tune. He asked me to send it back and he would look at the 93 and teak it, but I chose not to as I am satisfied like it is.

9. Also, learned that when going downhill to the Texas coast, I get slightly better than coming back home. That is even with the prevailing southerly wind pushing me back home.

Hmmm pretty interesting info. I still wish I could figure out what the deal is with the MPG average and how accurate it is, if at all.

BTW, what do you guys have setup on the screen. Right now I have instant MPG, average MPG, throttle position, and Tranny temp.

I used to try and figure it out on mine but once I noticed how much it moves around I gave up. Just take a long trip and figure the mileage the old fashion way then compare it to what the Gryphon said.

I have MPH, RPM, Instant MPG, Average MPG

You can run a tank and calulate your mileage, compare it to what the gryphon told you.

I monitor, the Engine temp, Tranny Temp, Voltage and usually the digital mph. I prefer the digital mph as it is in the corner of my vision and I don't have to look down at the speedometer.

I just have the plain Edge but I can't see why the Gryphon would calculate any different. With that being said on my last two fill ups the AVMPG was off by .3 one time and .2 another compared to doing it the old fashioned way. I would say that's pretty damn close.

Displays are: AVMPG, Cylinder Head Temp, Tran Fluid Temp, and MPH.

I would think the Gryphon and Edge would calulate the same. Your's is the closest I have heard anyone report.

I've had mixed results with mine. My truck has the "information center", so I can have it display Avg MPG on the dash. Once, it was exactly the same as what I got with a "fillup", hand calculation. Usually it's off by around 0.5 mpg. And, if I show the same thing on the Gryphon, it tends to be different than the dash display too - usually around 0.3-0.5 mpg. I notice the Gryphon display seems to update faster than the dash display, so I think it may be doing its own calculation.

Bill Cohron explained once why there is error in the displays, but my old senile brain can't remember what he said.

I'm displaying TFT, Battery Voltage, Gear and TC lock information and Inst MPG.

I make the trip from ft. laud. to Atlanta six or more times a year, 651 miles in 9 to 9 3/4 hours [night driving]. I finally got around to doing a gallons per trip check. ON the north trip on Bill's 87 econ tune I used 44.4xx gals, on the way south on ford stock I used 47.6xx gals, two pit stops on each trip. I now know all need to know as far as gas use goes since time and distance are my main concern. Of course weather, traffic will effect gas use and time and extra pit stops add time. But I'm happy, thanks, Bill and Corey.

Mostly monitor engine and tlt, rpm and mph, with the wheel in tilt ya don't see much of cluster anyway. Just me two cents.

Since I've had the Gryphon I never use the speedo or the tach from Ford. The only thing I look at is my fuel level.
