Question Custom tunes vs. 1715

For anyone that has had the Superchip max microtuner 1715 on the 5.4 and switched to custom tunes, what was the difference? Is it as noticable as from stock to the 91 performance tune? I am thinking of getting some custom tunes.

Well, I have the 4.6 but here is what I can tell you.
I originally bought the 1715 to help get rid of the horrible lag from 1st to 2nd during WOT. And it did help a lot (using Troyer's recommendations with the tuner). In fact, I was so impressed, I tried the 91 performance.

Now, bear in mind I have 285's on my truck and the BEST it ever did from a standing start was chirp the tires. After a few attempts to get the computer to adjust, it would spin both tires for 15 feet out of the gate.
It took me a full week to wipe the smile off my face.

I'm curious. I used the 1715 on my 5.4 and went with the 91 octane mode. Changed shift pressures to max and defeated the speed limiter. I played around with the shift points but one trip around the block told me I didn't know what I was doing. Mine pulls great after 2000 but has no a$$ off the line. What am I doing wrong?

You mentioned Troyer's recommendations? Are there "optimal settings" for use with the 1715 and the "performance" tune?

Thanks for any input. I learn fast!!

I did some more digging (using different text in the search string) and think I found what I was looking for.

If you use the "performance" tune on the 5.4 (2000-2003) leave shift pressures ALONE!!

Leave shift points alone except the 2-3 shift, bump it up 2 steps.

According to what I've read, those are about the only mods you want to make if all else it stock. Does all that sound about right?

Sorry for the noobie qustions. I usually work on my Falcon but couldn't resist getting more out of the new truck.

hey ranchman, yes thats all you need to do. bump it up 2 points from 2-3 shift. i did mine the same way and it doesn't shift out of 2nd until 80 mph i've been playing and such and the 87 really doesn't help much in the HP department but tuning the tranny is well worth the money. as far as the 93octane tune (maybe 91 where your at) it really woke it up i'm thinking about running C16 through it and see what happens. not entirely sure cause i don't have a box full of 02 sensors laying around but i bet it'll run good. i have a 4.6l also and it'll roll the tires in 1st, but its still kind of a dog off the line but when you get around 3500 rpm's it;ll really start o sing to you and it stays that way until you finally find the speed limiter(which i haven't found yet lol) good luck with tuning its fun
