Tune before or after mods?

So I am dang excited to say the least that I get to come home from Iraq at the end of the month, but I'm almost just as excited to have my "new" 05 F150 screw fx4 waiting for me when I do! I just have a few questions for all you experts here!

I am planning on getting a Gryphon tuner from PHP but also want to do a few mods. I'm going to put in a K&N cold air intake and a flowmaster 50 series dual exhaust, 2" or 2.5" leveling kit (can't decide which, any advice?) and probably 33" BFG's.

Should I do the mods first before I get the Gryphon? Mainly I'm looking for optimum performance(not neccessarily max power) and max fuel efficiency. I won't be towing very much either.

So what are your opinions? TIA

The best thing that you can do is call Power hungry Performance and talk to them. They can help you plan your mods to work best with their tunes.

First off, welcome to the site and thanks for your service to our country

I personally would get the mods first then the tunes. I went with a Air Force 1 cai and Magnaflo sido exhaust. I ran those for several months before I got my tunes w/no problems whats-so-ever. Once I got the tunes it was like holy crap, I should have got the programmer sooner but live and learn.

Happy New Year

I would stay away from the K&N intake I had one and it was super loud, and it gave me no power just noise, look into a AF1. And slowmaster muffler is prally the worst muffler for power go with a straight through design like magnaflow.

here is a vid with just the K&N intake http://media.putfile.com/KN-with-stock-exhaust-0-60

First, I wouldconsider other intakes. The S&B, AF1 or Airaid. Then I would get the Gryphon and do all the other mods except the intake. I would not install the intake until I got the custom tunes from Bill at PHP. Especially with a 2005. I would not risk running lean. You can enjoy the other mods and run the canned tunes until you receive the custom tunes.

S&B will get you the best bang for your buck as far as intakes go while still being a top performer. And instead of doing the slowmasters, go with a straight through like Magnaflow as mentioned before. The 14" will be a pretty decent sound level, check out these videos with my 18" Magnaflow SI/DO and S&B.

To answer the initial question, I would tune after the mods so that the tuner can take advantage of things like intake and exhaust.

I don't need a ton of power from my exhaust I was mostly looking for something to give me a few more horses, more deeper throatier sound, but still relatively quiet in the cab. That's why I had chosen the FlowMaster 50 series since I've been told by several people that MagnaFlow's are pretty loud. What much noise do you get in your cabs?

And actually this is the first time I've heard anything bad about K&N, but obviously you guys know what you're talking about if you've been through it!

I had a flowmaster on my 04 when I traded it in and it was loud in the cab, the a magnaflow kit had little to no drone in the cab while at Cruise speeds.

Hey Matt!

First, thank you for the sacrifice that you've made for our country!

Second, drop me an e-mail or a phone call before putting any CAI on your truck.

Third, COME HOME SAFELY!

Groovy Chick's response to you, mavrik, is typical of why so many of us are fans of PHP.

They put your welfare first, and will do anything they can to help you achieve your goals with your truck.

Safe journey home Brother. Welcome back to a world that won't understand what you've been through and that doesn't have the appreciation of life and death that you've come to accept. We try though, and eventually, things will be good again.

- Jack

magnaflows arent as loud as flowmasters, my dual magnapacks are fairly loud, but a si/do 18" would probably suit you better

We recommend the Magnaflow SIDO, too!
