When you load a program, it has a default setting for tires and gears, so if yours is different from the default, you have to change it. If you have 3.55 gears and the default says 3.73, you change it. Same for tires. I don't know why it is doing better, as you say, but the shifting pattern should be slightly confused as your speedometer should be off.

Whenever I go to a custom tune level (1, 2 or 3), I make it a habit to always open the "custom settings" menu and check the gear ratio and tire size. I don't really think the Edge gets that information from the stock tune at all, it seems to want to load a "default" setting that is programmed into it. (And yes, I think the manual is confusing, because when I got my Edge, now converted to a Gryphon, I thought it worked the way you read it).

My actual gear ratio is 3.73 and that's what the Edge seems to have as its default setting. If you have 3.55 gears, that is the value you should load. My tire circumference is about 2481mm accounting for "squish" but the Edge wanted to load 2356 (way too small). So, I verify those each time I change the tune.

If you have 3.55 gears, I'm guessing you don't have the factory tow option on your truck (which I do have) and that might make it seem like you don't have much power with the correct values loaded. If, you allow the default values to be programmed into the PCM, you may be getting the effect of "two wrongs making it right". If you like the way the truck pulls with those default settings, I see no reason to change them. Just be aware that your speedometer and odometer will be in error.

For BEST performance, you should really have your Edge converted to a Gryphon and you should get custom tunes. It's very affordable. The canned Edge tunes are a sort of "one size fits all" approach that try to improve the performance of the f150 across the entire spectrum of powerplants, transmissions, gear ratios and wheels. Not the best solution in my opinion, but, better than stock.

Give Bill Cohron at www.PHPTune.com a call and discuss this with him. He's a good guy and he won't feed you any bull.

As always, Bluejay comes through first with a clear, short, bit of advice.

Yeah, but that's what we pay him for, Bluejay!

Now, before anyone thinks I'm serious -- I'M NOT! So don't go sending me PMs and e-mails about it.

On the tires, if you use the number or the formula from Edge's manual, you will need to deduct something for the squish factor. I have found that I need to deduct about 5% when running 35lbs in the tires.

I can not seem to get to the custom Menu on my evolution. I have programmed all three levels at different times of course, but I'm still unable to get to the Custom Menu. I have read over my manual and it says you will be unable to access it the first time you program. What gives? Do I have to go back to stock before it will let me have the custom Menu? I really need to set my gears because I have 3.55's and I read that it defaults to 3.73's.

That's a new one on me. You have a different model, but I thought the 2100 was the same as the 2400 as far as how it works. You choose the level you want, say Level 3 and hit enter, then the next screen says:

Create a custom program?

( ) No
(*) Yes

You say yes and then it will take you to a screen with several options and you go thru them one at a time. You have to hit enter after each selection.

When I choose level 3 and hit enter, it tells me to turn the truck off and back on. Then it begins to program the truck.

Something is wrong with the unit, then. You need to call Edge. They will probably talk you thru an update or replace it.

That's the message you should be getting after entering your settings.
