What you are asking about is called custom settings as opposed to cutom tunes, just so you know. When ever you go to load a program, say Level 3, if you want to modify the settings, you have to do it every time. There is one exception. If you are already in a program and have asome custom settings already loaded and want to go change one or two items, you can "save previous settings" whickh is one of the options, and then go to the specific item you want to change and change it. That way, if you have several items with custom settings, you don't have to redo all of them. Hope that makes sense.

Yes, when you change levels, all custom settings go away and are replaced with the canned tune settings from Edge. Use that for awhile and then upgrade to the Gryphon. It's even better!

Hey Bluejay, can you tell a big difference between the Gryphon and the Edge? I have the Edge and thinking about upgrading. What made you decide to upgrade to an Gryphon?

You remember how it was when you went from stock to the Edge? It's similar going from Edge to custom tune. Not so much from the power side, I would guess at maybe only half again as much power. But, the downshifting difference is huge. On level 3, I could be running 50 mph and pull out to pass and no downshift, just steady acceleration. With Bill's custom tune, I can be running 65, nail it, and it downshifts and leaps out. That is on the 87 and the 93 performance tunes. I kept the canned Level 2 for towing as I seldom tow and now run the 87 Perf most of the time. It is well worth the money. In addition, if you tell Bill how firm you want the shifts, what gears you have, etc. You don't have to mess with settings every time you change programs.

I've seen this analogy in several places, so I don't believe I'm stealing it from anyone in particular...

Stock Tunes are like buying a new suit off the rack.
Canned Tunes are like calling the tailor and telling him what you need so that he can make you a new suit.
Custom Tunes are like going to a suit shop, choosing the fabric, and having the tailor take your measurements so that he can make you a new suit.

It wouldnt matter? when the previous owner sold it to you he had to bring it back to stock so your truck could read it and you now have a canned tune for which ever level you have it on.

Just a quick caveat...

Many sellers DON'T return their trucks back to stock before selling them. We know. We get phone calls from people every day who have purchased used Evos or Gryphons and need to get them unlocked. We recently posted about this very thing. If you're in the market for a used programmer, you might want to read it. It could, quite possibly, save you $75!

I don't think you're quite right here. Yes, the previous owner DID have to return the unit to level 0 (stock), or your truck would not accept the unit. But, it COULD have custom tunes in it instead of canned tunes and, as long as your truck's HEX code was the same as the one on the previous truck, you'd probably be able to run his custom tunes (with possibly poor results). I doubt that was the case, though - just pointing out possibilities. (And, if I'm wrong, there'll be a thousand "gotcha's" up soon).

With the exception of about 15 or 20 people, there are no custom tuned Evolutions. They all have canned tunes so if you bought a used one it would most likely work on your vehicle unless you have a late calibration and the Evo hadn't been updated in a while. Even still, a quick update through Fusion would resolve that.

Gryphons, on the other hand, are almost always custom tuned for the specific vehicle and the liklihood that a used unit would work at all on your truck is about 1 in 50. It's about 1 in 300 that your calibration is an identical match, and that's not even taking into consideration the difference between their mods vs. your mods.

Hope this helps.

And, Bill comes through with the REAL information, as always. I thought maybe there might be a few more custom tuned Evolutions than, say, 15-20. That's why I posted what I did.

Sorry if I confused anyone. :o

No problem Jack. We always appreciate your help.

I couldn't expect you to know how many units were custom tuned. At the time, most people weren't aware that we were custom tuning the Evolution. About the time people started catching on to what we offered, Edge had asked me to stop the custom tuning and we went private label instead. So from November of '07 to February of '08 we only tuned maybe 20 or so Evos. Of course, we still offer the upgrade for the Evo but at that point it's no longer an Evo.

As Paula Deen would say, "Happy holidays, y'all!"

I have one of those, so I'm one of about 20. I feel very special!
