Best custom tune for towing?

I was wondering which of the 3 tuners; troyer, vmp, or gryphon would be the best for towing? I've read articles and reviews from people around here and everyone is happy with the performance of all three, but I didn't know if one would be a little better tuned for towing? I have never purchased a programmer before and read that it is hands down better than stock, especially with the roush o/r, and either s&b or af1 that I end up going with.

I tow with my truck almost everyday and reliability is a must as well as the power/drivability.

Thanks for the time

Like you hinted at, everyone will tell you what they have is the best. I would recommend calling each of them and talking to them about what you want from your truck and what they can do to help you. I like PHP's customer service so that helped me deicde. It's cool being able to monitor all the different engine parameters with the Gryphon as well. Maybe that's not as important to you but it's one more thing to consider.

They're close in price. With a Gryphon, you pay only for the tunes you have written for you, so if like me, you perhaps never plan to put 91 or 93 octane gas into the thing, there's no reason to have a tune for that. I have two tunes, on for towing and the other for non-towing.

As BlackFX4 said, with the Gryphon you get gauges. When I tow, I want to know what my transmission temperature is and I want to know the exact charging voltage, since I have 2 batteries in the trailer and I'm powering a refrigerator in it too.

Talk to Bill Cohron at www.PHPTune.com He's a really great guy and he'll help you decide what's best for you without pushing any product on you.

I think the Xcal (VMP) is just under $400, Troyer I think wants $450 for an Edge and PHP was about $500 (including the 3 custom tunes) when I bought mine. Look in the classifieds on here and see what you can find also. Some people get lucky and buy the Edge there and save some money. There are other places that sell the Edge if you look around the internet. You can send an Edge to Bill at PHP and he will convert it to the Gryphon for you. I want to say it's like $35 for the service but again, I don't know right off hand. Hope this is helping you.

Per the PHP website, "The cost to upgrade the Evolution to a Gryphon is $25 + shipping, which includes re-casing the programmer and updating the firmware. Each custom file is $50."

Give those threads a read if you look at used Edge's. PHP has a forum now too you might find interesting.

Ok, thanks guys. It all sounds like what I thought, they are all pretty much good, especially over any other canned tune.

Don't get an Edge and convert it to a Gryphon - just get a Gryphon instead. The cost for the unit is $399. Tunes are $30 each. Here's their products page for the one for your truck: http://dygytalworld.ehost-services13...e_Vehicle.html

I guess since there are soo many pros, are there any cons to any of the three tuners from a performance or p/r standpoint that didn't live up to your guys expectations?

This will be a big purchase for me (tune and cai) so I really want to weigh my pros and cons.

Also I plan on going with the roush o/r (like I said before), is there a specific cai that complements the tune the best for performance; s&b, or af1, etc.?

Mike Troyer offers packages which include tunes, tuner, intake, exhaust, et cetera. Check out the website. Then give them a call. Even if you don't buy this stuff from him, you'll get a better idea of why he chooses specific items. I hear it's because he has done a lot of R&D with these trucks & has a better idea of which components offer better performance. You can always do your own search for lower prices.

I would say the power difference between all 3 is probably negligible. All are great tuners and know their stuff. However, if I was going to tow very often, I would get the Gryphon just because of its ability to monitor tranny temps and other information.

Thats kinda what I was thinkin.

I hate make these kind of decisions especially when they all seem to be good. I guess its a good problem to have though!
