98 5.4 - What Tuner should I go with ?

The truck has a 3" CAI, Long tubes/High Flows and soon a cat back w/Borla SIDO. Also has a Transgo SK.

Never tuned before, with just these mods is it even worth it? The 98 has stock Non PI heads, truck runs really good.

How should I go about this and who should I deal with ? There is a tuner in my area (Livernoise Motorsports) - But I'm not sure wether to use these guys, Troyer or PHP ..?

My vote is with PHP.
I love the pod that you get with the gryphon. And you can beat the customer service!
many will agree.

As far as performance standards more than cosmetic - Not sure what you mean by "pod" - haven't heard that term before. Is that what's mounted on the dash by chance?

Yes, the Gryphon sits in its own custom designed pod on the dash. It's pretty cool. We're trying to convince Edge to make one for the Expedition, too. The Gryphon in my Expy simply mounts to the dash with velcro and a bracket.

I can e-mail you a pic of my " pod " if you would like to see what it looks like mounted to the dash. There pretty slick, looks factory. Once you have one you will feel lost with out it. I have mine set so I can view mpg, trany temp, avg mph and water temp. The trany temp is great for towing.

Thanks Goovy Chick & Supercrew. I checked out the PHP site, I am interested. From what I gather , you can tune according to mods I list on the order form ? Or is data logging required for tweaking after ? I'm trying to get out of making a trip to the Dyno.

I've been holding off on the tuning for awhile now. What I would really like to know is if this would be a noticeable difference with 0-80 times. That's basically what I use after modification to see if it helped. I picked up 6 seconds after the LT/HF install, would I gain more from tunning at this point?

MODS -

3" Custom intake (polished), TB/Plenum (polished).
Upper Aluminum Intake - Slightly ported/100% polished.

Mandrel bent Long Tube headers (wrapped), High Flow cats welded to the collectors.

Borla SIDO exhaust.

Transgo shift kit - E4OD/4R100.

BTW - U have mail Supercrew

JB,

You can't go wrong with a tuner from Troyer. He's a sharp guy. With that said, we shouldn't have any problem handling the modifications you've indicated.

To answer your question, you should notice reasonable gains from tuning for the modifications you have. Typically, free flowing exhausts and modified intakes will cause a slight increase in volumetric efficiency which can result in a lean condition if the fuel mapping is not adjusted accordingly.

If you'd like, give us a call and we can get into a little more detail about your mods.

Take care.

Yea , Mike's a very busy guy as well. It sounds like you are also, but meeting the demand + everyone seems to be happy with what your doing. That goes a long way.

I think I am lean, I noticed the valves turned white on me. That was before the LT's were added. I'm pretty sure that points toward a lean condition, I could be wrong. I'm still within margins as far as the computer/stock programming sees things, I haven't thrown any DTC's anyway.

Thanks for the reply, - Sounds good.

JBrew,

I really like my SCT Xcal 3 tuner with VMP tunes. My truck has more ***** throughout the entire power band with Justin's tunes. Justin knows his stuff when it comes to tuning our 5.4 V8s. If you buy the tuner from him, he will throw in 3 custom tunes for ya. I have the 87 Tow and the 87 Performance tunes and couldn't be happier.

The xcal 3 will work for the newer F150s as well, so if you decide to move on to a newer rig, you can use the xcal 3 for that truck as well.

Yes I got them, Thanks allot. The pic where you have 1 -4 , is the first 3 the tunes you have the option to run? - With #4 returning you back to the OEM tune ? If so , is there anything special that needs to be done when switching to another program ?

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply, Yes, I've heard good things about VMP/Justin in the past. I really don't get over here that much, so I could benefit from a crash course on how this works. - When you order you initial tune, you list the mods relative to engine performance. The tuner considers mods when configuring your first 3 tunes. You also give the tuner and idea as to what your looking to achieve thru tuning.
Question is this;- After receiving your tunes, is data logging required at this point in order to determine a custom tune ? Or are you set first time around?

Thanks
