I have read a lot on this forum that after installing a CAI it is highly recommended to do a custom tune...apparently to avoid running lean. Is this not true? Can I just replace the CAI and be done with it or should I do the custom tune as well? I have been given so much conflicting information...$300 for a CAI isn't too bad, but throw in close to another $400 for a custom tuner and it almost makes it unaffordable. I don't want to ruin the truck by cutting corners, but it seems like it all depends on who you talk to.
All of your after market intakes are fine with the stock tune on the motor, there is the one AF1 3.5" that does require a tune to be safe, but other than that one intake you should be fine. Same goes for exhaust, headers, plugs wires, all the basic bolt on mods. If you change cam, heads, or your mods are throwing a check engine light, then I would say you need a custom tune.
But for the money custom tuning is one of the best ways to get horsepower out of your truck, but I am personally waiting till I am out of warranty for my tunes.

agreed. but back to what you were asking about needing a custom tune. the truth is that only the 04+ 5.4l 3v's need tuning after installing a CAI. thats because they re-designed the maf sensor and it doesnt quite work right in an aftermarket intake. so you should be fine. but you wont regret getting a custom tune.
