VMP 87 vs 93 Oct

I've recently received my tune.

I've loaded my 87 tune at the moment and it's definitely a nice increase, HOWEVER, it doesn't feel as tough as the Superchips and Edge canned tunes.

I realize those specify to run 93 octane and that definitely helps.

Has anyone run both 87 and 93 octane tunes? I'm going to try the 93 tune in a couple weeks when I get a full tank of 93.

Any thoughts?

I got my programmer yesterday and I got 87 performance, towing, and economy. I uploaded the performance and was a little disappointed as well. From reading these forums, everyone makes it sound like the truck jumps when you tap the gas pedal. It does pick up and go a little better and I can tell that it shifts a little firmer. Just not all what I expected. Maybe it's b/c we have the 97-03 model? As far as the 93 octane, I can't comment. I hear that it's supposed to be better, but I didn't want to pay for it even if I was to break even. It's a psychological thing for me. I guess if I wanted to use the 93 octane, I can load a canned tune and try that out.

How does the Superchips and Edge canned tunes feel tougher?

I can only comment on an 04. There is a huge difference between the factory tune and the 87 Performance VMP tune. Going from the 87 performance to the 93 performance, their was a modest increase also, the fuel mileage improved by an average of almost 2 mpg when I kept my foot out of it.

I think the main difference is the shift timing. The Edge and Superchips would downshift alot at a lower rpm. I wasn't expecting much more than the canned tunes but I cant say for sure until I get that 93 octance in there. Next Friday Im going to tune to 93 perf...

The older 97-03 2V trucks do not pick up a ton of 87 octane. My old 97 F150 used to ping even when stock, and I know alot of guys are in the same boat.

Now the 04+ 3V trucks and 2v 4.6s pick up good power even on 87.

I have never heard of tunes being described as "tough"???

Anyway, my 87 performance is very strong considering the power is being extracted from only 87 octane fuel.
It is not much stronger than the canned level 2 tow was but it is a better tune and the truck is no longer running too lean!
The canned 87 tow tune did actually perform very strong.......it was actually more like a performance tune!

i have a 01 5.4l with the edge and i personally like my edge and i do want to try out the sct/xcall 2 which i heard is about the best out right now, but i really like the edge since i have the option to adjust the truck to my liking and with adjusting wot fuel and wot shift points and rpm shift spots and normal driving on how hard it shifts over stock and how early or late i can make it shift i really like the edge.

stock time for 1/4mile was around 18 or so and now i can get under 17 only on level 2 with 87oct i did run a low 16 with level 3 with 93 oct and 0-60 on level 2 with 87 was wround 9 seconds i think and 93 oct on level 3 best i ever ran was 8.6 and thats with a f150 supercrew 2wd with 3.31 gears and i seen mileage increase at around 2mpg when crusing and i tihnk their is a big difference in power but most of the difference in the power is due to the shifting changes made

man, i should feel lucky then. i did a 0-60 run today(on my gryphon ) with my toolbox removed and a friend in the pass. seat, no pre-loading the TC, canned 87 towing tune. 8.39 sec.

now, i know that these times might be a little off, but prob not that much. im waiting till i empty this tank so i can fill up with 91 or 93 and run level 3. will post up as soon as i can. cant believe im saying this, but i wish i were out of gas already!

Just adding a follow up. I filled up with 93 and loaded my tune. VERY nice improvement over 87. Low end is torquey, high end wants to keep going!

I have a '07. Even the 4.2L V6 feels better with a custom tune.
