Troyer Performance - Stage 1 Performance Package
Glad I opened up a can of worms...
We can probably agree to this:
Sound good?
I should get my new tube in tomorrow...
We can probably agree to this:
- There is a slight chance that running a CAI on a 2004 5.4L will cause a dangerously lean mixture.
- Without a wide band A/F ratio sensor (or other testing equipment), it would be impossible to tell (baring an engine disaster or a CEL)
- Ultimately it is the truck owner's decision.
Sound good?
I should get my new tube in tomorrow...
Sct x3
8/22/08
I attempted to install a canned tune. As soon as the PCM was finished being flashed, the display on my truck read, "Engine Fail Safe Mode" or something to that effect.
I returned the PCM to stock and called Anita. She had previously told me that there was a chance of this happening. Anita asked me to e-mail her the strategy for my truck. She then contacted SCT and they were working on a fix. SCT was going to try to have it out by Friday but that didn't happen, so I'm expecting it tomorrow.
I'm not having the best of luck, but to be fair, none of this is TP's fault. The CAI screw up was AF1's deal, and this canned tune issue is obviously an SCT issue. Furthermore, the folks at TP (Anita and Crystal) have been great in helping get these problems fixed. Also, both the SCT and the AF1 people seem to be working hard to 'right the wrong' with out dragging their feet at all, which I expect, but also appreciate.
Probably more news tomorrow...

Replacement Intake Tube and SCT X3 Canned Tune
8/25/08
Air Force One Performance - 3.0" Intake
UPS delivered my replacement tube from Air Force One Performance. Everett told me that he would include a pre-paid shipping label to return the defective tube but that wasn't in the box. I'll e-mail about that A.S.A.P. and I'm sure they will take care of it. I also didn't get the C.A.R.B. exemption sticker with the intake so I'll mention that in the e-mail. The instruction mention it... that's the only reason I knew it was missing.
SCT X3 Canned Tune
Anita e-mailed me the fix file for my truck. Essentially, I loaded the fix file into one of my three custom tune slots. It is however a canned tune. I tried to upload the fix file to the truck's PCM but had the same exact problem as before...
When I spoke to Anita a day or two before, she had told me to turn of every accessory in the truck that could drain power from the battery (as this interferes with the programming). I turned off the A/C, unplugged my phone charger, turned off the head lights, and turned my Pioneer head unit off.
HOWEVER, the head unit display was still illuminated... it just said "Off."
I looked briefly for the fuse panel to pull that particular fuse. I couldn't find it quickly. I forgot where it was (somebody refresh my memory!) and then I seemed to remember tapping into the cigarette lighter line to power the head unit (or maybe the factory sub, or maybe the blue tooth, I forget). So, I said hell with it and I just opened up the dash and unplugged the head unit and blue tooth. Then I retried the tune. It worked!
So who knows... it probably would have worked the first time before Anita and SCT went to the trouble of getting me a custom/canned fix file. Sorry guys!
Hopefully others can learn from my mistake and save themselves and TP some stress down the road...

Last step: AF1 3.0" Intake Install
8/26/08
Air Force One Performance - 3.0" Intake
I installed the intake. For those that warned against doing this... I genuinely appreciate your input. Really.
Here's a picture of the two intake tubes side by side. The top one is incorrect and I will be sending it back to AF1 soon. The bottom one is the correct one. Look closely at the screw holes in relation to the rectangle shaped opening.

Here's a picture of the shiny beast installed:

I'm pleased with it. Now, everything has been installed with the exception of the custom tune. After installing the intake, I do notice a slight vibration in the pedal when I really mash it. Any thoughts on this? I did leave the negative battery cable off for about an hour to reset the computer. This might be something that goes away as the computer learns the new set up.
Also, I think that the engine temp gauge is showing slightly cooler than normal. Usually it is dead on the middle line. Lately it has been just to the left (cold side) of the center line. Perhaps it just fluctuates slightly and I never noticed it before. It has certainly been hot outside though.
I'm thinking about putting a little bit of teflon wrap on the vacuum line connection. Although there would be a slight chance that a piece of the teflon could break off. In which case, it would go straight into the engine. Anybody know of any good alternatives?
Troyer Performance - Stage 1 Performance Package
Now that it's all installed... I'm really pleased. I feel like it's a great package and you save approx. $200 buying everything together. I absolutely love the exhaust. Exactly what I was looking for. The intake is certainly attractive and when you combine that with the tuner, it really is hard for me to be easy on the accelerator. And that's coming from a guy who really likes to go easy on the gas... Well, used to anyway.
The customer service I have received from Troyer Performance has been outstanding. They are very reachable by phone and when you're spending good money on something like this, it's nice to be able to speak with someone directly.
When I have the chance, I'll give an update about fuel milage... stay tuned. That's punny.

No underdrive pulley. I ordered the Stage 1 Package and that is included in the Stage 2. The Stage 2 also includes e-fans.

It looks like an ignition system upgrade is included in the package for your truck.
Have fun!

Congrats on your purchase, txag08! I think you'll be more than pleased as time progresses.
A word on the Maggie...
My Magnaflow started off a bit mundane. By that I mean that it wasn't very loud and, frankly, was exactly what I wanted. As time progressed, it's seemingly gotten a bit louder (some attribute this to 'break in' periods of time). My point - don't be suprised if it slowly seems to get a bit louder.
Currently, I'm still extremely pleased with mine. I've had it on my 05' since mid-05 and have had numerous comments on how great it sounded... I think you'll continue to be pleased but, it will likely get a tad louder as time progresses...
Again, enjoy your new toys!!
