Programmer/Tune?

Eventually I'm looking to do a gear swap, and my tires are already a non-stock size. I know I need to adjust the computer for the new gears and tire size so that the shift points, odometer, and speedometer are correct. I know the dealer can do it for me but I am leaning towards a Hypertech PP III because I would be able to maybe wake the truck up a little as well as change the computer. Is the Hypertech worth it, or is there something better out there that will make the changes I need to the computer and add a little power (on a limited budget)? Thanks.

How much would you be willing to spend? Think about this ... The Xcal2 or Xcal3 from VMP Tuning is around $400 with three custom tunes. The Xcal2 and Xcal3 will also work on any Ford vehicle with the ODBII port, you'd just have to buy new tunes. It's a lot better than having to buy a whole new tuner. It's a great value for what you get. I'd do it right the first time and get the custom tuned Xcal2 or Xcal3. It's a much better choice that will gain much better results.

$400 would be do-able, well depending on the wife's approval . Is there a website or something that I can get more info on these? Thanks.

Yeah, I'm teetering between 4.10s and 3.73s. Is there a website or something that I can get more info on what you're using? Thanks.

The Gryphon is going to be $500. The Xcal2 or Xcal3 is $395-400.

In the interest of full disclosure, you get gauges with a Gryphon. It also gives you alerts, diagnostics, records, 0-60 and 1/4 mile time readouts. I believe you can get at least some of these added features if you add a Scangauge to an XCal for another $150 (more or less). Oh, I think the mount for the Scangauge may cost extra (but I could be wrong).

Since I absolutely want the gauges, the choice is a no-brainer. And with the Gryphon, you get to work with Bill and Corey Cohron at PHP! (Unfortunately, you can't have Thumper as your best friend).

Touche' ...

Well Jack and/or Janet, I don't see you mentioning the Livewire so in the interest of full disclosure ... SCT, the manufacture of the Xcal2 and Xcal3, produce a product called the Livewire. It does everything that the Gryphon does plus more. It's basically a Xcal2, Xcal3, plus gauges. Just like the Xcal2 and Xcal3 it's custom tunable and you can switch it to any other Ford vehicle with the ODBII port as long as you get new custom tunes. It's a lot better than having to buy a new programmer.

And, I suppose, Justin can tune the Livewire, so any owner of it with VMP's tunes gets you as a friend as a bonus!

And, in the interest of full disclosure, I've only read positive things about VMP's customer service too.
