whats the best?
Forget it. Don't get anything. You can't afford it.
The typical, average cost difference from 87 to 91 octane is about $0.20 per gallon. Let's say you use about 2 gallons a day & put 20 gallons into your truck at the pump. With 91 octane, your fill-up will be about $4 more.
You can't afford $4 every 10 days or so? Then you can't afford a tuner or tunes at $400.
Just leave your truck alone and drive it. You can't invest $400 and expect to make that money back by getting better performance out of your truck. Your truck will only be more responsive to the accelerator and you will want to open the throttle more to enjoy it. You'll use more gas.
i want something similar to the edge with the dash mount display and the easy change settings that i can just pull over and change to a different setting if i want, and i also dont one that i have to use 91 octane seeing how its like 4 dollars a gallon? and how much are the tunes that you download for the 3 different settings that you can get for the tuners?
I had TP originally, swithed to VMP because I couldn't stomach TP's delays. There was nothing really wrong with Troyer's tunes, but expecting someone to wait 8 weeks for minor updates is not even close to being acceptable. That being said, there are several things I like better about the tune VMP sent me. With the TP tune I always thought the timing was too conservative based on datalogs, especially since I had told him my heads had the swirl dams removed and polished chambers, which removes potential hot spots (swirl dams have a sharp machined edge) from the chamber and allows more timing before you hit potential detonation. I'd like to have tried adding timing manually, but Mike had seen fit to remove that ability from the programmer. Big strike there. The VMP tune has a considerably more aggressive timing curve with no signs of detonation, no significant knock retard according to datalogs, and I was able to add a couple degrees up top. I noticed more of a difference in shifts with the VMP tune over the TP tune. Whenever I would install the TP tune fresh I would have an odd highway decel condition where you would let up on the gas a little and it would feel like the throttle blade would close completely, then recover. This would last quite a while until the adaptive strategy would learn around it. No such issues with the VMP tune. This tells me the MAF curve is probably a little better in the VMP tune.
Overall I'm happier with the VMP tune. Plus, it took about a week and a half to get it, and when I sent my datalogs in I received an updated tune the same day. As Justin gets more good reviews he'll probably get busier and more stretched out for delivery, but even if he's out to 2-3 weeks now thats a whole world better than 8 or more.
Thats honest feedback from someone who has used both, not parroted hearsay from those on the board who have only used one or even some who don't even have a tuner.....

I was wondering if anybody else had noticed this entire forum's unanimous regurgitated product loyalty.
Get used to it, it's never going to change, it'll get better though. Back in 2004, if you mentioned anything other than TP you were shunned and hushed in horror. It was a million times worse than it is now.
Pretty soon I'll even be able to proudly post my REAL mods!
