How stock?

If you have an edge evolution, when you take your truck to the dealership, do you just program back to stock, or do you program back to stock and remove the edge and the pod? I would think a programmer on the dash would arise some questions. I was gonna buy an edge this week, but just worried about my warranty. Any experiences with dealerships and edge evolutions?

I have a Gryphon now, and I'd recommend you get that instead of an Edge, but to answer your question:

I reset the PCM to Level 0 (stock) and remove the Gryphon, pod and connecting cable from the truck before taking it to the dealer. It takes very little time and is about a five minute job to reinstall once I bring the truck home.

I've never discussed programmers with my dealership. I have no way of knowing how they feel about them. And, with the number of "Service Advisors" they have on hand, I'm not sure I'd get the same answer from all of them.

I did send a letter once to the CEO of Qwest, to get broadband internet access, but somehow, I don't think I'll ask Jim Click about this kind of "mod".

Personally I will be uninstalling the Gryphon file and returning to stock for each trip to the dealer, as well as removing the dash pod. (I say "will be" since I don't yet have my truck nor my Gryphon).

Take a look here to see how simple it is to install the pod, and the uninstall will be just as quick and easy.

Right Thumper, but does the "Service Advisor" speak for the owner?

I suppose, if the dealership sells aftermarket PCM flash tools, they are accepting them. And, if they do, I suspect they'd have a tough time mounting a defense against using one, regardless of brand.

a buddy of mine works at a local repair shop, and he said that someone had a 150 hp chip in a diesel and it blew the intercooler out and they called the company (chevy i believe) and had it replaced under warranty...point is if your good friends with the bosses at places, chances are your fine

Jack the Owner of the Dealership usually doesn't keep his hands in anything. He's paying the salary of everyone else to do their job. So yes the service adviser more times than not speaks for the owner since the owner elected him to do that job.

I sort of knew that Thumper. But when you have a whole "herd" of service advisors, I imagine they might not all speak the same.

If you had a problem and the "service advisor" said it was the programmer's fault and would not be covered under warranty, you could ask to speak to his boss, and then maybe the "boss" above that, and .... (I'm sure you get the idea).

Ultimately, of course, you might end up talking to a Ford rep who would have the final say.

Be nice to avoid all that if you knew all the service advisors were saying the same thing.

I understand where you're coming from and of course any one person, like you or I, is going to have limited knowledge on how most dealers actually behave when it comes to things like performance modifications. I'm lucky and have three dealers close to me who don't give a rats *** about them. I had a transmission go out in my 2004 F150 twice, it was a lemon, and they replced it both times with the Edge programmer sitting on the dash. I also had the rear end replaced twice in that truck, all with a lift, 35s, programmer, etc. So like I said it's really just up to your dealer and if they are having a good day.

On a little, funny, side note. I actually was in one of those Ford dealers recently. I bought a Fusion key and wanted to have it cut for my car. I figured if they messed it up, it'd be easy to get a replacement. Well anyways while I was in there they were trying to get me to buy a Roush supercharger for my car. I asked them if I bought it from them and had them install it if they'd cover ALL warranty claims. The guy said without a doubt and even went on to say that I could install it and they still would. I'm guessing they weren't selling many of them. So that just goes to show you how cool some dealers are about stuff like that.

Yeah. I knew the install on the gryphons and edges were easy, and they pod just uses 3M tape. I just wasnt sure if yall took them out, or claimed they were just to monitor your trucks numbers and what not. I have no problem just removing the pod, just cleaning the surface of the dash, and re applying 3M to the dash pod. Im not too familiar with how I would go about setting up a custom tune, I was just gonna stick to the canned edge, is the custom from gryphon worth it? and whats the price differences.

Don't even bother with the tape or the velcro for the dash pod, you won't need it. And in some cases it has caused people's dashes to have spots of paint missing. Yes the custom tunes from the Gryphon are very much worth it. I had HORRIBLE problems with the Edge that could never be fixed so I went to custom tuning with the Xcal2. So in my opinion, spend the extra money now on a custom tuned Gryphon and save yourself a headache.

How does the whole custom tune work? When I order it, do I tell him what I have done and he puts it on there, or do I download files offline? How much is the unit, and then each tune? I know the edge is 399 at autoanything. is that about right for the edge. im trying to figure out what would be the best thing for me and when to get it. right now i dont have any performance mods. I have a flow super 44 si/do. but thats as close as it gets.

The cable holds mine in place. No tape. If you are concerned with the warranty, then remove the pod before going to the dealer. You might ask you service manager how they look at a tuner. If you are interested in the Gryphon, call PHP and talk to them about the custom tunes. They are the way to go as opposed to the Edge.

The Gryphon is $495 so it's only a hundred dollars more but you're getting 3 custom tunes of your choice. Just to put that in perspective, tuners like VMP and TP charge $50 per tune for the Xcal2, Xcal3, and Livewires so it's worth it. Bill will tune for each mod you've got, tires, etc. Not to mention it'll be much more precise, it'll have a LOT better driveability. I'm completely against the Edge since I had so many problems with mine when I did have it. But for the people who can't go with the Xcal2 because of not being able to run gauges and don't want to buy a Scangauge, whatever, it's a good option. If you don't care about the gauges really, look at Xcal2s from VMPTuning.com. They sell them for $395 with three custom tunes. Both would be very good options.

I have an Edge as guages and Troyer tunes in the PCM. I remove the Edge and then put the Troyer thing in the PCM input that says "DO NOT REFLASH - CONSULT OWNER". I then tape it in there so that someone would have to break the tape to reflash the truck and I ask that they put do not reflash on the invoice, which they've yet to do. Ha. But I always say there is a custom program in there and do not reflash.
