Tuner?

I had a guy tell me that tuners are extremely bad for your motor. I was wondering how much truth there was to this. And I also was wondering if anyone could possilbly recomend a good tuner that would help increase fuel efficency? And what kind of gains in mpg could I expect?

they have the potential to cause harm to your truck but usually do not. the reason i say potential is because if you get a tuner with bad tunes then there can be some problems. stick with name brand and stick with reputable tuners for custom tunes and you will be golden.

the tuners can actually let your truck live longer. if the transmission shift firmness is bumped up it eliminates alot of heat built up by slippage that give the nice smooth shifting. heat is waht kills automatic transmissions..

you could get a custom tune through troyer performance and have him set you up with a fuel efficiency tune. as for how much MPG's to expect im not sure.

have a good one

I think there is some truth in that statement if it's only reffering to "canned" tunes or chips.

Tunes written by someone who knows your stock strategy and any modifications you've made, who asks what you want to do with the truck, how you drive the thing.. another story altogether.

If they know what they're doing then I believe they can improve the overall life of the drivetrain.

I went with Troyer tuning and can recommend it, but there are other custom tuners for these trucks that have good reputations as well.

Bottom line, I think a good tuner can write strategy that basically unlocks the potential that Ford supresses for various reasons.

I went with the Edge Evo. I love it, and recommend it. Bill(ASEMechanic) does custom tunes for them. But which ever way you go, either Edge or the Xcal with troyer tunes, its a great investment and you will want to spend loads of time driving. I know i do.

Bill can no longer tune the Edge. However he does offer his Gryphon, which is basically a generic Edge.....that he can tune.

Good custom tunes from one of the reputable tuners on this site will not hurt your truck. There are a ton of benefits, ford tunes these trucks very conservatively from the factory.

I just took a look at your stuff... Looks good
What kind of numbers could I realistically expect from yours? I am planing on runing 87 with a banks ram air intake, and roush off road exhaust on a 05 5.4 screw.... thanks I am interested in mpg improvements mostly, but also would like a prof. tune as well

87-octane tow-preferred
93-octane tow-preferred
93-octane max-performance

are the tunes I got 05_sprcrw, and they all work excellent but the 93 max is my weapon of choice; it’s real sweet, still feels as fresh today as day one & I get a solid 16mpg local driving
