97-03 Edge Tuner Problem Resolved??

Hey guys,
Just wanted to check with some of you that have the Edge tuners on your 97-03 trucks and see if you're still having problems with them or if you are happy with the units now. I know, I know, someone will tell me to just get an XCal, but I really like the idea of having the attitude monitor and the additional readouts. Also, were they able to resolve the issue with the tuner to display the tranny temperature?? That'd really be nice for towing. TIA--DIY

I have had my Edge installed since Oct 2006. No problems to speak of. Only when it gets cold out the screen freezes up, normal LCD display stuff though. I just unplug it, plug it back in and it works fine.

As far as reading trans temp, I just purchased an autometer trans temp guage.

Yeah, That's what I was afraid of. I guess I was hoping they had resloved that issue with the trans temp. Just seems like a $400 tuner should do what it is advertised as doing, ie trans temp. Didn't really want to have to do both. WHere did you mount your autometer guage? Will one of those A pillar guage pods fit in along side of the Edge display?--DIY

Monitoring trans temp (or not monitoring it) is not an Edge "problem". It is the simple fact that the factory ECU does not monitor it (as it does in the '04-later trucks) so it is not available for the Edge to display it.

I'm still very happy with my Edge. I was in the Beta testing program and have 50K+ miles on it so far. I had one problem after I updated it, but that was due to a problem with my computer and I reflashed it from a different computer and it cleared it up.

I mounted my autometer trans temp guage in a guage pod on my A pillar just a bit higher than my Edge. I wish I had newer pics to post. My camera is on the fritz.

I guess given the problems the Edge users have been having, and the inability of the edge to display what I want it to display, maybe a guy would be better off buying a custom tune and then spending $200 on a gague pod and gagues. --DIY

Yeah, because the ONLY reason you buy an Edge is to display the trans temp.

I was actually liking the idea of the display, but if I'm going to have to buy a gague cluster as well in order to display what I wanted to see, I'd just as soon buy Troyer tunes. At leas if I would have a problem, they would help me fix it!--DIY

You keep talking about a "problem". What problem? And as for Troyer, yeah you will get support if you can wait 3-4 months.

There have been a lot of issues with these tuners on our trucks. Everything from minor (display locking up) to majoy (having the tuner corrupt the program in the ECU and having to pay the dealership to re-flash it). Many of these units were Beta testers, as I am sure you know if you were a part of the Beta testing group. (here's a link to the thread for those who need some light reading https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=236703) Just makes me a little squeamish to think of having the tuner screw up my computer and then have to pay Ford to re-flash it. I guess maybe I've just got a bad taste in my mouth from reading the Beta test threads.

I'm taking it you haven't had any issues with yours and you are pleased? I just really can't get past the fact that I like to tinker and as such, the attitude monitor really appeals to me. I like gadgets and gizmos, you know? How well pleased with yours would you say you are on a 1-10 scale (10 being perfect)? Would you recommend it to your friends? I know, I'm starting to sound like a phone survey, but I really want to do my homework before I plunk down the kind of money they get for these things.--DIY

I was part of the beta group. Yes, there were issues with the beta units. EVERY mfg has had issues during beta testing, it was just more public with Edge because there were a lot of people here who were in the beta program and they allowed us to discuss it here. NONE of the other mfgs have had an open beta program like Edge. Edge was awesome to work with during the program. There were two people that I know of that needed to get the dealer to reflash their ECU during the beta program and Edge reimbursed both of them. I have not heard of any of the production units causing any ECU damage. There was one person who tried to start their truck while the tuner was uploading (even though the unit displays DO NOT START while it is uploading) and he had to get the dealer to reflash at his own expense, but that was also 100% his fault and in no way related to any problems with the Edge.

I know for a fact that Superchips and Diablo have had MAJOR problems during their beta programs, to the point of needing to totally replace, not just reflash, customer ECUs; but, you never heard about it because they kept it all under wraps.

I am very pleased with mine. I'd rate it a 9 out of 10. The tunes that are included work very well. I have over 50K miles on it, mostly on level 2. I just recently started playing with the custom settings and have been able to get a little more power and mileage out of that setting by tweaking the timing and fuel.

Good to hear. I'm glad to hear a sucessful resolution to what looked like a real mess at first. I guess the fact that the Beta test was part of this forum allowed me to see that bad side, but I guess until now I had not heard the positive side of the situation. I'm thinking I may still end up with one. We'll see how kind the taxman is to me here in a couple moths.--DIY
