edge evo or custom tune from vmp
edge evo or custom tune from vmp
I need and want a tuner and will NOT wait 10 weeks from one from troyer. ive heard good things about vmp tuning and am leaning towards them with there 5 day turn around But on the other hand i have a $100 gift card to 4 wheel parts so the edge will be cheaper. can you do the same things with the edge as u get from a custom tune it just has a learning curve and u need to do it ur self like shift points and such altho i am woundering about HP and fuel econemy does the edge offer anything like better fuel mpg in a certin setting and they only advertive 15 HP wont a custom get me more than that???
thanks matt
thanks matt
an edge purchased thru 4wheel parts will in no way compare to a custom tune from vmp tuning. or any custom tune. the only thing that you will get with the edge is the display. also you can play with shift points, some timing, wot fuel, and a couple of other settings with the xcal2 and a custom tune. or you can get the livewire.

Custom tuning is better in my opinion so I would do that over the Edge.

Yes, Justin at VMP will write tunes tailored to your requests. I ran the 93 octane performance tune in my truck and can't say anything but amazing! I'm about to have my Mustang dyno tuned by him once I get my intake. Justin is a good guy and is one of the best tuners out there. Just remember he did work for SCT!

I do think If I was going to switch I would like to give VMP a try since you dont have to wait 3 months and havnt heard anything bad about his cutom tunes.
Good Luck!

Moving on...
Edge obviously has concerns about how allowing custom tuning the Evo is going to affect their plans to get CARB certification on their products, including the Evolution.
For those who are not aware, Casper's Electronics was sued by the EPA for selling devices that would basically tamper with or defeat emissions control devices. (See: Casper's vs. EPA) This lawsuit set a precedent that undoubtedly will carry far and wide across the automotive aftermarket and will in effect force out any companies or individuals that create or sell devices that can alter any part of the emissions control system. This will include things like EGR block offs, O2 eliminators, CAIs, exhausts, cat delete kits, and yes... even chips and programmers.
Obviously, the liability for a company like Edge to offer custom tuning for the Evolution is an area of great concern. When I left Edge in May and had my tuning deal set up with them, the "Casper's" fiasco had not occurred yet. At that time, they felt that with my knowledge and experience that I would be qualified and able to provide a service to an area of the market that sorely need some assistance. Obviously it would improve sales as well. Hey, they're not stupid.
Well... I had a long talk with Edge yesterday and we specifically discussed the issue of CARB and EPA, and what that means for the future of custom tuning for the Evolution. It may mean that in the short term we might have to back off on custom tuning for a bit while other possibilities are investigated. It may also mean that custom tuning will come to a grinding halt. It's kind of up in the air at this point until we can get something figured out. I can't discuss details any further than that.
I will continue to browse the forums to provide technical support and troubleshooting for those who have (or have had) any issues with their Evolutions. However, I have decided not to discuss custom tuning preferring to wait until Edge and I can come to some sort of agreement that makes everyone comfortable.
I know this may come as a disappointment to some people. Just when there was light at the end of the tunnel, it went and got dark outside.
Hopefully we'll get this figured out in the next couple days and get back to making the Evolution the power-monster we know it is capable of.
Stay Tuned...
Bill
