Few questions for tune.

So I've pretty much decided on trying out a VMPtune on an Xcal 2. But I have a few questions I'd like to figure out before I go spending the money.

I plan on getting a 3'' AF1 intake from Troyer, should I purchase this before I get my VMP tune, or does it not really matter?

Also, when you goto the VMP website, and your about to purchase the Xcal2, it asks you for the 3 tunes you would like (87 gas mileage, 87 performance, all the way up to 93 gas mileage/performance.) Which ones should I go with? I know I need to select the octane that is available around my area (87, 89, 93), but as far as the gas mileage/performance part, which ones should I match up with which octane?

And lastly, it asks if I'd like a USB ($3.00), and Analog ($10.00) cable with my purchase. I know the USB is for the computer so I'd be purchasing that one, but what does the analog cable do?

Thanks in advance guys!

Tunes - these are really no one's call but yours - only you know how you are using your truck. Do you tow? Do you want performance over mileage? Are you comfortable spending $ on premium fuels even though you may/may not see any mileage gains?

It's a uniquely personal choice; I'd hate to recommend what I use, and then you being pissed because you really didn't like/want that combo.

You can always purchase additional tunes later as needs change. You store these on your computer; using software from SCT, you can write these to the unit at any time. Make sure you ask for all your tunes sent to you as *.LL3 files.

What about shift firmness - what are you going with there?

You need the USB cable to facilitate the above.

You need the analog cable if you intend to interface a wideband controler/recorder to the Xcal2.

AF1 3" either before or after - my choice is before. But let Justin know in any case - ya never know.

Finally - your TUNER should be answering all these questions! WTF are you paying him fer, anyways!

Thanks for the response MGD!

I really don't plan on towing. I'm looking for more performance. So I'll possibly go with a 87 performance, 89 gas mileage, and 93 performance. Like you said, if I ever need to change anything I'll be able to do that later on.

As for having the tuner answer my questions, yes that is true... but a lot of people on here (like yourself) have some very good information which I figured I would get before talking to my tuner so I can you the knowledge gained here and relay it to Justin for him to help tweak anything with his knowledge.

I really can't decide on going with the intake before or after the tuner. I'd really like to get the tuner before, but having the intake installed first, and letting Justin know about it I think would be the better option.

Understood, bud - really was just jokin' with ya in any case.

I agree with your last statement.

Good, luck, man

I added a 3" AF1 before ordering tunes from Troyer and I'm glad I did.. I was able to experience the nice bit of performance gain just from the intake before getting tunes, so it only made me want tuning all the more!!

If money's an issue I'd say get the tunes first though.. Best thing I've ever done for my truck..
