Better times with level 2
Better times with level 2
I don't really Know how but my truck got better times with level 2 than level 3. I ran level 3 first with these setting: shift 1-4 @5000, shift 0, firmness 1-4 +2, timing +2, fuel 1.60, max rpm 5600, idle +100. Got a 15.41 Usally a good tune but didn't feel good tonight. Switch to level 2 with these setting: shift 1-4 @5000, shift 0, Firm 1-4 +2, timing +2.5, fuel 1.45, max rpm 5600, idle +100. Got a 15.07 A full .3 tenths faster. The truck has 33's with 4.56 gears and 93 octane. I pushed on the converter as the tree counted down for all races. What Happened ?
Can't help ya, except your shift points are way too low. Bump up the 1>2, 2>3 to 5400 rpm. You need to keep the rpms up when it hits the next gear to keep it 'on the boil'.
One possibility; you may be getting very mild, undetected detonation at WOT on L3 ( that tune is a litle leaner). Hence the PCM is pulling out advance - hurting your times. Just guessing here, though.
BTW - don't push on the converter - just nail it and let the TC flash. Much better.

I hate it when we agree!
I would also increase the shift pressure a little on both 2 and 3. To maybe +6 at least.

How long were you running lvl 2 for when you did this test? When you ran the test with lvl 3 how many tanks of fuel did you run through? If you were running on lvl 2 for awhile and just switched to lvl 3 for 1 tank chances are the Adaptive learning BS didnt really learn anything. You need to cycle a couple of tanks to get the full effect.
bluejay or MGD,
I just realized today that i had originally set up for lvl2 and had filled up with 87octane, and then saturday switched to lvl 3 but running 87, i haven't noticed anything other than it's running good and smooth but what would your advice be? to switch back to lvl2 for now until i run this tank out? or should i change the timing - at all? I was thinking since my ampg is running about the same now as it was the first 60 miles i was running lvl2, why not just reprogram to lvl2 and run this tank out....what do you guys think?
Thanks,
Nate

I believe L3 default tuning is for 91 octane; running a 91 octane tune on lower octane fuel generally is not a good idea. I suppose you could retard it - but by how much? This is not something I would guess at.
You said you already do not notice any effects, even though I'll wager the PCM is pulling out advance already - that's how good the knock sensing system is on these trucks.
Good luck.

thanks Bubba I took your advice and set it back to lvl 2 and by Sunday I'll probably be just about due to fill up so then i'll run 92-93 and reset to lvl 3.
Actually now i'm curious to see what if anything changes with the ampg running lvl2 between now and then, I know supposedly the lvl3 is leaner, but it seems to me on lvl2 it doesn't wind as high unless you really mash it. And i'm not one to do that typically driving to and from work on back roads that wind around so your top speed is never over 50. On lvl3 it seems the throttle response is earlier or that you feel that power boost a little sooner in the pedal and to me it's seems more even through the 2000-4000 rpm range....then once i fill up again and change to 93 octane and reprogram for lvl3 i'll compare again....i'm hoping within 2-3 weeks I'll know for sure what's best for my every day driving because i'd really like to get it set and leave it there other than when i tow. well thanks again.

So far, my best time was on stock level 2. Admittedly though, my custom settings have been rather conservative. and the temperature has been MUCH warmer since I used stock settings so I am waiting until they drop again before I do any more testing. At the time I was running stock settings, I was doing my testing in early evenings at about 71 degrees. The next test I did was with the timing and WOT bumped up slightly and I lost almost a tenth. The temp though was in the mid 80's. We have had several weeks where it was still 82 or so when I got up at 6:00 and hit 90 by 8:00.
My experience is that on Level 2, I have more low end torque than Level 3, which makes sense as it is for towing. However if I need acceleration at about 50 mph up, it has much less torque than Level 3. So, I have at times used Level 2, 87 octane when I knew I was going to be running around town only. If I knew I was going to be on the highway, I would use Level 3, 93 octane so that I would have the power at 50 mph up, for passing, ect. Now, having said that, for sometime, I have just stayed on Level 3, 93 octane as I do a lot of freeway running and I get better gas mileage from Level 3, so it more than makes up the difference in cost.
Also, I just like the aggressiveness of the shifting and downshifting that Level 3 provides. I use the same custom settings for both levels other than adjusting the timimg for 93 octane on Level 3.
I'm not racing and I don't rally care what my times are, I just like to feel the power and I like to go! I like Level 3 because at 70 miles an hour, if I need some ooomph to pass, it delievers. on the 2 lane Texas highways, you sometimes need that to get around annoying drivers, etc.
One other thing, I filled up last night and on the last tank of Shell 93, I got 17.373 mpg running around the Metroplex. Driving with a semi lead foot, that is pretty good. I have the 5.4, 3.55s, Supercrew, oversize tires.

We all agree level 2 provides off the line tq. Maybe my truck needs that to get my bigger, heavier tires rolling. I know rotating mass has a big part on performance plus the truck weights 5620 with me in it. Just my .02
