New Edge Owner

Wondering if I could solicit some input on 2 things since I'm new to this Edge and don't want to lose data, etc.....

1) when using the Lightning3 software, 2 quick update windows pop up and then another larger window comes up and says to connect the device to the USB which I then connect the tuner to the USB cable, and there is also a wizard search window that comes up and says something about Edge USB device and it appears to be searching (hourglass) but i've let it go and go and it doesnt seem to do anything....I've done my initial install of the tuner and am running level 1 economy for now and I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong or if those 2 quick updates windows with progress bars in the beginning actually did the update search and there just wasn't one???? Any ideas?

And 2) What is the consensus out there on running level 1/Economy canned tune for the best mpg on every day driving? Or is there a better way to get the most mpg out of it? Maybe 1/Econ but custom with reducing the shift points? OR is there a better way?

Thanks!

Hi.

Can't help you with the s/w ( I use an Xcal2), but your second Q I can offer this: L1 is a trans-only tune - no economy gains here.

You will acheive best economy using L2 or L3, optimized for the highest octane, highest BTU-content quality fuel in your area, and running that. It's all about maximizing efficiency, (search/Google for BSFC). Optimized tunes have been posted numerous times - yours for the searching. Lol! Try BlueJay's posts.

Overall best economy, regardless of tune, is a very lite right foot - keeping the throttle positition at it's smallest opening for your desired rate of travel - TPS is a PID you can monitor via your Edge to help with this.

Good luck

Cheers
Bubba

I get the best economy out of level 3 tuned to run 93 octane. Also, that gives best performance, especially on the highway when you need pep at higher rpms. If its all city driving, you have more low end pep on level 2 running 87 octane.

I set mine as follows:
Shift points: 1-2=5250 2-3=5250 3-4=4800
Pressure: 1-2=+12 2-3=+12 3-4=+9
WOT fuel: +1.5
max rpm: 5650
max speed: 110
set my tires and gear ratio
if running 93, I do a +1.5 on timing for the level 3

Hi.

In your case you are after the efficiency, not the power. BSFC, remember?

BTW - Edge tunes L3 to run a little leaner than L2, apart from any trans shifting algorithm changes (not the same thing as adding/removing fuel @ WOT). More power, better efficiency, but higher EGT's - hence no towing.

Cheers

ok MGD so....you're saying for efficiency level 3 and possibly to work with the shift parameters such as firmness and shift points? But for towing then I definitely would want level 2?

I run level 3 most of the time because of 2 reasons. I do a lot of freeway driving around town running from 70 to 80 mph. Plus, i am addicted to level 3's shfit characteristics. you just have to compare the 2 and see what you like. I know Stealth runs level 3 all the time as well.

Hi.

Yup - from all the feedback from folks like that fast, but dumb, Texan, L3 appears to be the ticket.

Edge states unequivocally that you should NOT tow on L3; use L2 for that.

Good luck. Keep notes to help you find what works best, for your truck.

Cheers

thanks for the input appreciate it....i'll try going to level 3 after today and see how the ampg compares to what its been the past 2 days. I had heard comments that made me think level 3 was the "racier" setting and highest performance so in my mind i was thinking nah I don't want the most HP/torque and that's why level 1 seemed appropriate. I'll stick to the standard tune at first and see how the shift feels then play with those settings and go from there. thanks again

i actually set it back to factory earlier tonight then came in and ran Lightning3 and did the updates...went back out and reprogammed for level 3 and i have to be honest, it seems like level 3 has more pep now than before....any chance thats true or just in my head? At any rate I reset my AMPG and filled up again so we'll see how it goes from here. I'm going to leave it at the level 3without customs for now then after this tank i'll go with the customs recommended and compare.

I run lvl2 when I tow my camper or trailer. Then all other times lvl3. I can tell a big differance from 2-3 and I can tell a big differance from stock to lvl2!!

bluejay432000 what does the WOT fuel: +1.5 do? Ive been tweaking my setting with the help of 05supercrew and has been great.
Im going to bump my timing +1 just havnt had a chance yet.

"My" settings running 93.
Shift points: 1-2=5000 2-3=5000 3-4=4800
Pressure: 1-2=+6 2-3=+6 3-4=+6
WOT fuel: default
max rpm: 5600
max speed: 110
set my tires for 325/60/18 and gear ratio 3:73
Timing: defualt
