I want your input..

I'm going to call TP next week and order the Xcal II.. I'd like y'alls informed opinions on what tunes to order..

I mostly use the truck for daily commute, maybe twice monthly 250 mile round trip on the interstate.. longer trips sometimes, but all interstate..

Occasionally haul a little trailer with one jet ski, more often a lawn mower or two and some lumber, tools and such in the bed.. nothing much.. so basically it's mostly for very light duty..

4.6L Supercrew, 3.55LS, 17 inch wheels, AF1 "3, Borla siso cat-back..

I've been thinking 87 perf, 87 tow, 93 perf for the ones to order..

Opinions, objections, differences?

All of your thoughts will be very much appreciated!!

Thanks!!

Since you have the 3inch AF1 I would change your 87 tow to a 93 tow. Your stock tune is good enough to tow. If your not happy with the stock tune, then I would stick with your choices. I know I went with those choices 87 tow/perf, and 93 Perf. It also depends on where you live and what gas is available. I know I mainly use 93 octane so I have a 93 tow and 93 perf. I also have a 87 tow, just in case I'm traveling and can't get 93 gas. The 87 kinda covers everything. Just my thoughts.

If I had to do it all over again I would go with 87 gasmiser,87 tow, 87 perf., the gas prices are getting to out of control for me to use the 93 tow and the 93 perf that I have now, all I use is the 87 tow and I think it is good enough. I have the 87 perf stored on the computer but I don't know if I want to load that in the xcall and pull one of the 93's out yet.but if the gas price climbs over 4.00/gal then that is what I am gonna do.

I’ve had TP’s custom tunes on my 04 Screw since 12-03-04. I got the 87-octane performance, 93-octane tow-preferred and 93-octane max-performance; love um all; never had a problem

I have the 87 max-performance, 87 tow and 93 max-performance. Since the stock tune would be satisfactory for towing I would skip the 87 tow and go for the 93 tow or a gas sipper tune. If gas gets any higher I will need to cut out the floor and make a "Flintstone F150"

No matter how high the gas prices goes (which really suck that they're this high), it's roughly only about $6.00 difference between filling up with 87 or 93. I think I can forgo a starbucks coffee for one day to fill up with 93 instead of 87 for better performance. I personally don't drink starbucks, but u get my drift.

kdds, that sounds like the way to go

One other question, do y'all carry your Xcal with you in the glovebox / console and just load whatever tune is called for at the time? Or do you keep it mounted, and where? Any pics of one mounted would be appreciated!

I got your drift! My solution was go out and buy a Hog so
I did.Now the truck will last longer and the Hog well it speaks for itself.
On a truck note I started switching back and forth with the 93 perf. tune and the 87 tow tune.I did this for around 6 months and used each tune for about a month.I found when I had the 93 perf tune in that I pushed the truck harded, faster and burned gas faster, because I guess I am weak minded and love speed.87 tow tune I drove for mileage not hot rodded much but the change over stock is still greatly improved and the way I drove was netting me higher milage.Hence the 5 or 6 bucks at the pump is not quite that when your foot is on the floorboard most the time since you see I am weak minded!!

I originally ordred 87 economy, 93 tow & 93 perfrmance. They talked me out of the economy tune and into an 87 performance tune. That's the only one I've tried so far, but I can feel the difference in power and I'm netting around 2 MPG better than the stock tune (if I keep my foot out of it ).

Hi Tex Edition,

By now you have probably already done this, but just to give you a little feedback....

Since you have the 4.6, I would suggest getting an 87 octane tow tune, and 87 octane performance tune, and then a 93 octane performance tune, just like you suggested.

We gain enough power on 87 octane even in the 4.6 that it is worthwhile, IMHO, to do a tow tune for 87 octane - it will not only have more peak horsepower but also more part-throttle torque - then you will have performance tunes for both 87 and for 93.

Now some others will say (as they have) to forget an 87 octane tow tune as you can use your stock tune for that - and that can be a valid point if you do not tow often, but when you do, it's a heavy load - in which case I would do an 87 octane performance, and then 93 octane towing and 93 octane performance tunes - that way you wold have maximum power for towing as well as for performance.

So it really gets down to how often you tow an to a larger extent, how much weight you tow - for frequent towing and/or lighter loads, go with what you first said - then if you have to tow heavier loads (say, 5000 lb or more), go for the 93 octane towing tune as I mentioned in my second example, as you will need every bit of power you can get to haul a heavy load with the 4.6

I hope that has been of some help to you at this pint my friend, & thank YOU for your service, too!

Thanks Mike for the response and info.. I think I'll go with your recommendations for my 4.6.. 87 perf, 87 tow and 93 perf. Don't tow very often and when I do it's only maybe 2,000 lbs (if that) plus a bed loaded with picnic junk, so 2,500 max.. And if that changes, and it may, well I'll just order the appropriate tune!

Thanks again!
