Gotta ask

Not trying to start a flamewar with this thread, but why would someone recommend to another member to get an Edge over an Xcal II & custom tunes? I could understand when the Edge was about $100 cheaper than the Xcal II, but with them being the same price I simply do not understand. Am I missing something that makes the Edge and canned tunes a better option over the Xcal II & custom tuning? I know with the Edge you get the guages, are those better to have over a tune that's custom made for your truck? Just wondering.

I have an Edge and would recommend a TP tuned Xcal2. When funds become available I'll be making the switch.

I would assume that its more than likely because the Edge at one time was a little less expensive and many jumped on it for that reason. Thats not a bad thing of course. You often spend what you can afford...

Instant gratification. Wait times for TP are about 2 months... I know I'm still waiting. It would be awesome to have paid the money, and loaded the tunes into my truck on the same day.

I understand that and said that in my post, but the prices are the same now and I still see alot of Edge recommendations.

Now this makes sense to me because I have been waiting almost 2 months now and by going with the Edge I could have probably had them about 1 1/2 months ago. If I would have gone for instant gratification and the Edge I know I would have eventually regretted my decision once the wait time by going with the Xcal II instead would have passed. I am perfectly happy with my decision to go with the Xcal, but damn this wait is killing me.

I was in on the group buy last year and spent a Jackson more on my TP tunes than the going rate at the time for the edge.

I wasn't charged until the day my Xcal2 shipped, so while it wasn't instant gratification - it was pretty damn close.

I think what it comes down to is people like the guages and you can have it in the next two days. I would love to try Troyer's tunes but for now the edge will do. How much more performance are getting the troyers tunes? Anyone ever see or heard of two of the same year trucks/same mods 1 having the Edge and the other having troyer tunes racing?( I should probably have done a search before asking this...:o )

Well i bought the Edge for the instant gratification, which turned into almost instant disapointment. Good thing is the place i bought it from is where i am getting all my performance stuff to date, and i told them i wouldnt mind trying the Edge as long as it was hassle free. The edge was far from hassle free, so i returned it the following monday, no questions asked. Sad thing is that Edge customer support still hasnt replied to my email i sent them, and that was 2 weeks ago.

I will now wait for a custom package from Troyer!

These are two completely different items that are somewhat related in that they are power adders, but I don't see how you could even try to compare them side by side.

One of the big reasons, at least in my eyes as an Edge owner, is that it's fairly simple to use, looks cool, and it has it's own TV commercial. Plus, not everyone needs "custom" tunes which aren't really custom unless your car goes on the dyno and is tuned accordingly. If your the typical Edge owner you have an exhaust and an intake, and that's all they really want or need. Not everyone is out for that last 1/2 hp. I chose the Edge because I liked the gauges it had, I could tweak it myself if I wanted the shifts firmer or softer, and I could back out the timing to compensate for the chitty gas in my area. Once, I do some more modifcations if any, I would definiately consider TP for tunes, but as for now I'm happy with my Edge.

I AM NOT BASHING TROYER, from what I have read here, he sounds like a really great guy with a lot of business in his hands, sometimes more than he can handle, and I look forward to doing business with him one day.

"not custom unless it goes on a dyno?"you are comparing a tune for your pcm code and hex file versus a tuner made for hundreds of pcm codes, next time be more accurate in your comments -phil

I have read that most bolt on modifications (other then power adders, cams and major porting) can be compensated by the pcm without any special programming. So how is that custom?

Here is a review from MoJoe who had a Edge and TP Xcal2. Read post 31 and 32.

Wrong. It is a custom tune based on your driving needs, your mods, your truck etc, etc. Look at the pages of info you have to fill out to request your tune. This has been rehashed so many times but yet some people still don't get it. We are glad you like your Edge but that does not validate your need to make disparaging comments about the Custom tuning from Troyer and the XCAL. Dyno tuning Optimizes the already customized tune.

The Edge is a great product for a canned tune but it does not give you the option to do future mods or upgrades to your vehicle and have the ability to tune for them. If you are going to keep your vehicle stock an Edge may be a good choice for you. The gauges are definitely a plus. If you want the best in performance a custom tune from Troyer in an XCAL or Livewire is the only way to go.

I would say stay away from the Edge just for the fact that so many people are having problems with them and then having to pay the extra money to have their truck towed to the dealer and having it reflashed. I am very happy with my Troyer tunes.
