newbie to this OBD II stuff, help on tuner...

I play with windsors, especially the 5.0 in my 94. I have used a tweecer and dilly dallyed with an EEC-tuner.

Is there something similar for my truck (2000 F150 with 5.4)
I don't want a canned tune, and I want to be able to edit a tune, as i put parts on. I would like to do exhaust, CAI, TB, Intake plenum, and the intake itself, and if I can find them, maybe heads, or just port and polish like i do with the old mustang E7's. I have the knowledge about the EEC IV computer to do most tuning, but don't know much about the EEC V
Any suggestions?
Buy a tune from Troyer over and over as i buy items?
Thanks guys!
Lee

SCT has something called a racer pack that I believe is an addon to an x-cal 2 that allows you to alter or write your own tunes, I'm not quite sure. SCT is pushing their dealers to sell them, but not everyone wants to. I do not recommend it unless you really know what you are doing, it is much safer to just let Mike T write you some tunes.

I think the tweecer should support your truck too... and its probably cheaper than the sct racer pack. its only the 2004+ trucks that arnt supported by tweecer.

.. much cheaper than getting the car retuned after every mod.

much thanks!!! I"ll look into the tweecer again!
definatly don't have the money to slap it all together at once. Most of the funds are coming from scrapping metal.

Actually, the Tweecer is not particularly cheap, nor is it a the tool I would recommend for tuning one of these F-series - that is NOT a knock on the product by any means, it's simply a matter of recognizing the difficulty in actually knowing and having access to the parameters that are required to really do a proper in-depth tune on these vehicles in particular. Just for one matter, due to the *thousands* of different strategies the F-series (and particularly the F-150's) have - each model year alone they have hundreds of different strategies, and there are extremely few tools that can begin to handle that properly - in fact, only one that we feel is worth using.

You may find a tool that handles a few strategies here and there OK on these trucks, but in terms of a tool you can generally count on to handle virtually all of the strategies you would run into in just a 2000 F-150 alone for example, I would recommend the SCT Racer Pro package, and we can help get anyone set up with that.

Keep in mind (and this is just in general) that unless you have some very detailed knowledge about tuning (and hopefully about F-series vehicles in particular), you will run into a very steep learning curve and will spend quite a bit of time and effort working thru this. Over the years I have tuned what seem like just about anything from turbo Porches to V-12 BMW's, dual PCM Ferrari's to you name it, and by far the hardest vehicle platform I have ever seen to tune properly and consistently is the Ford F-series - between their numerous configurations and the hundreds of different strategies each and every model year alone, it's quite a challenge, and one that even many "tuners" really don't do well, as it requires specializing in the F-series to really be good at tuning them for not just best safe & sustainable power, but part-throttle torque, driveability, and so many other aspects.

Yes, there are EFI tuners that can do an "OK" basic tune on a number of these trucks, but extremely few that really know these trucks and their many strategies in detail - and none that I know of who know them as well as we do - but this is simply because we have specialized in this platform for over 15 years, and we are really the only company that truly specializes in these vehicles.

Just remember that there is no package or tool that is going to turn anyone into a "tuner" - you still have to know a lot about engines, their tuning requirements, and when it comes to these vehicles, about modular motors and these F-series in general to really do a decent job. There is no getting around the requirement for having a serious depth of knowledge in EFI tuning, and specifically for these FoMoCo's. We spend a lot of our time helping other nationally known tuners tune their customers' trucks, simply because their expertise is in other vehicle platforms - just like we aren't the go-to guys for world-class tuning on say, a Honda, just for example.

Now with that having been said, for anyone who wants to take that on, I think that's a fine idea - and the tool to use is the SCT Pro Racer package, which we can set anyone up with, if they desire.

For more details on this and to get an idea of what you are really getting into (and by the way, I do NOT mean to "talk down" to anyone who actually has serious tuning knowledge, I'm just trying to "enlighten the masses", for lack of a better term, just a little bit!), then by all means, please feel free to give us a call and we'll be more than happy to help!

Our number is listed just below each of or posts for your convenience.

I hope this brief info helps, and best of luck!
