Ordered xcal 1 for my 4.6...what to expect
I got the 87 tow, 92 tow, and 92 performance tunes. What can I expect from this? Will I notice any power increase from the 87 tow or will I have to load the 92 performance? I have had this ordered for over a month now and still waiting for troyer performance. I can't wait until it comes in. Just wondering what I need to expect from this.
Hi.
Good choice
This is for a '99 4.6, right?
You will notice a little bit of extra grunt on 87, but the 92 octane perf tune is where the best gains will be.
Part-throttle response improvements will be readily apparent, as there is more torque available everywhere.
Over and above that, regardless of tune, you will really notice the vastly improved shifting, removal of various delays (and other optimizations) in the factory strategy, and the extended WOT shift points.
Plus, if you were one of those folks where your truck could not go open loop, (and a few from that era were), then you are in for a real treat, as that is addressed, and your gains will be even greater. TP can tell from your PCM code if that applies to your particular truck or not.
Search around for others who have done this for their impressions.
BTW - did you in fact get an Xcal1 or is it an Xcal2?
Good luck with the wait, and the tunes.
Cheers
Bubba

Ahhh. okay.. took a guess (based on screen name), as it wasn't mentioned anywhere. Sorry about that.
Pretty much the same applies though, except delete the 'Open Loop' part (not an issue in 04+'s), and add the extra benefit of a spectacular ETC ( electronic throttle control) implementation - no more throttle lag on the torque pedal ( which is what that thing under your right foot really is )
.
The 04+ 4.6, with a perf tune, can make approx the same rwhp as a stock 5.4 ( torque will be down a bit though - that's the stoker 5.4 at work here).
NP with the Xcal1 - it loads the same tuning. What you don't get is user adjustability, code reader, and the high-speed datalogger.
Cheers

Sounds good. I am trying to wait patiently for it but it has been over a month now since I ordered it. They had to send me an xcal 2 to read a computer code and I sent that back to them almost 2 weeks ago so I hope it will not be long until I get it.

MGDFan gave exactly perfect info - the new 4.6's in the 2004 & up trucks with our Troyer Performance custom tuning end up at about the same stock power level (or even a little bit higher) than what a stock 5.4 3V F-150 has from the factory - so it is a definite improvement.
And of course, the throttle response will be much better, as well as the shift characteristics, and just about every other aspect of driveability.
MGDFan gave excellent and dead-on answers, well done!
And congrats to 99ls1z for taking advantage of us blowing out our inventory of the original XCal 1's so he could get our custom tunes for even less.

I want one so bad
Hate the way these drive-by-wire trucks drive.
OK now my interest is really peaked! I have the 4.6 as well (2005 model), but I couldn't justify parting with the cash for the X-Cal II, but it looks like the X-Cal I has everything I need. Damn this forum for giving me these ideas! Anybody have specific numbers for HP & Torque incresases on the 4.6 with the X-Cal I?

Check out this thread (kinda long - pay particlular attention to TP's posts)...

Hope this helps. You can search, as I did, to find more info on this topic.

Thanks MGDfan! I did do some searches but I was searching for the xcal I so that's probably why I didn't find that thread. Really interesting about it taking a 4.6 to the same numbers as a stock 5.4. Are there really any "must haves" on the xcal II that the xcal I doesn't have?

The differences are: OBDII code reader, end-user adjustments, and a built-in high-speed datalogger. Check out either TP's web site or SCT's for details on the Xcal's feature set.

http://www.sctflash.com/product_xc2.php
Both load exactly the same tunes - it's up to you to decide if you need the extra features.
I think the Xcal1 is becoming a legacy device - perhaps you can get a deal on one, if so...
And don't forget TP offers members of F150Online a discount.
Hope this helps.

Hi Slash,
Well, I really do recommend going with the XCal 2 simply because it has the end user adjustability for things like tires size & axle ratio changes to recalibrate the speedometer (we can do that in th tuning of course for you, but it's just that you won't be able to do that yourself), the ability to read & clear DTC codes, a built-in datalogger, and so many other features that make is *so* worth the additional cost.
The only reason those XCal1's are cheaper right now is because they are the older style units and we are liquidating our inventory - now that is a cheaper way to get our great custom tuning for the 2004-2006 trucks (they won't work on 2007's), but you are giving up a lot in the way of features.
Just read on our web site about those two different parts - 9300 is the part number for the XCal 1, and 9400 is the part number for the XCal 2 - and you will see the differences are indeed very significant - the only thing that is NOT different is the actual results in terms of our tuning, with either unit you get the same tuning.
Personally, I feel strongly that XCal 2 is the way to go as it can handle everything up to 2007 and beyond, as well as all the features it has that the XCal 1 does not - but if you are on a budget and the XCal 1 fits that budget, then that is a viable way to get into our custom tuning.
That's really the best I can tell you - and please understand I don't mean to play salesman here in trying to talk you into the XCal 2, it's just that it's *so* much more capable and a better unit in terms of all it can do, it's ability to work on just about any future FoMoCo vehicle in the foreseeable future, etc.
The bottom line is, either one will work for any 1996-2006 FoMoCo vehicle and deliver our same tuning - so if you are on a tight budget, the XCal 2 will work - it just doesn't have a code reader, datalogger, a backlit LCD screen, on-board adjustability for things like changes to tire size and axle ratio (we can do that for you in the tuning, but you cannot do that change yourself with the XCal 1 like you can with an XCal 2), etc.
I hope that info helps you a bit, & feel free to call us to go over any of this in more detail, OK?

May I add my .02 worth?
I have purchased the infamous XCal II & AF1 from Mr. Troyer. What he is able to with these trucks is amazing.
I had a posted a while ago and joked about Mike adding .8 liter of displacement just by his tuning!
Basically I raced and beat a 5.4 L with the same body style, tool box in back, etc.
My gas mileage went up close to 1 MPG....more like 3/4 to 7/8 a MPG but I drive with a heavy foot.
I recommend the AF1 also. The sound it makes @ WOT is nice.
Oh, by the way, I towed (with Mike's tow tuning) about 6K pounds with about (I think) 400-500 pounds in bed and besides taking me a little bit to get up to speed, I think the enginge & tranny did great. Was about at 2800-3200 RPMs up hill (OD off) and about 2600 RPMs on flat. This is going off of memory, so it's not really a great example, but at the time I was really impressed.
For me at least, the 2" level kit did drop my MPG. I kept a detailed (weekly) MPG for over the first year and right after the installation, even with the XCal II it went down about 1.25 MPG which is about .25+ below my stock MPG.
Oh well, it looks great though!
Get the XCal II and don't look back.

Hey guys mine will be here tomorrow (Friday) and I will definitely let you know how it does. I ordered the Xcal2 and the Air Force 1 intake. The AirRaid was not available at the time i ordered on 23 Feb. I have been like my 3 year old daughter before Christmas. Guys I have been really kicking myself for not buying a 5.4 truck. When I read in an earlier post that with this tune I will have almost as much power as a stock 5.4 I feel much better. Stay tuned
