XCal II & First "Kill" (LONG POST!)

The XCal II absolutely pwns!

I called up Crystal @ TP to get the tracking number for it only to find out it was already delivered! I left a note in the morning on the door for the UPS man (or woman )

Went home for lunch, a loooong lunch to read and install it.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!

Finished my day @ work.....went to second job and finally got to really get on it for an hour or so.

Just itchin' to get on it all night(within reasonable speeds ) and notice a 63 or 64 Galaxy (my brother had one) next to me at stop light (in slow lane) with 2 guys in it inching forward. The car is obviously being restored (needed paint job!) but new rims, tires, etc. giving me the feeling that the engine is probably rebuilt. Oh yeah, almost forgot the "Moroso" stickers.

Light goes green, they take off quickly, not racing or anything but get a car length ahead of me. At this time, I wanna punch it, but don't want to get beat by THAT car (kind of intimidated)...noticed the dual exhaust (chromed tips) out the back.

I give the F-150 a little gas, not "goading" them, just gaining on 'em a little.

BAM! Homeboy guns it (about 45 MPH), so I floor it too. He was a little quicker than me...had more momemtum, was ahead of me already, etc. but the 3-2 downshift kicks in and I start closing the gap to about 1/3 the original car lenght but had to let up because of upcoming traffic.

The driver shakes his head back and forth like he whooped me. At the next light, my lane is thinner than his and I coast past him....they are both talking smack between 'em both...not at me, but about me.

Green light again and I hang back (again at about 45) for him to catch up. He now knows I want to race him....he gets behind me (fast lane) and I get over in his old lane after a few seconds so we can go at it again. Hit another red light (ask Krohbar about Lincoln traffic lights..OMFG) Green light again and we both manage to get ahead of two cars in front of us.

Rolling at about 50ish, he dumps it at about my rear wheel and gets about 1/2 length on me before I floor it....he was pulling away ever so slightly until I hit about 65-70ish (wasnt watching the speedometer!) and whoooooooom! I was STILL in second the whole time (thanks Mike ) when I pass him, and honk twice! ROFL.....they pull behind me and make a right @ next stop light (it was green, however) which was about 1/2 mile after I passed them. (I attribute this to the TP sticker in back window LMFAO. I was laughin' the whole time....even if he would've smoked me, I would have been still laughing.

I understand it wasn't a "true" race, so to speak but the grin from ear to ear made me think some people would like to hear the story. I really want to go up against another truck, though. Ford, Dodge, Chevy...for what it's worth.

I'm running the 87 octane perfomance tune currenty and the responsiveness is incredible. Touch the gas, the truck moves at same time! The low-end has definately improved but the top-end is incredible. I love the feel of the 3-2 downshift also. I had to pay in this year in taxes, so that is why the AF1 is postponed. I can only imagine the perfomance with it. Or a Magnaflow cat-back......Oh yeah, the black/white TP sticker is the only sticker allowed on my truck. Matches great too! I think that it added another 2-3 HP.

Mr. Troyer, thanks for coming through and backing up what others say about the XCal II! ROFL I can't say enough about this product except it does what you say it does, so thank you, and the rest of the TP family (especially Crystal for putting up with my questions, canceling the AF1, etc.!) Your hard work is MUCH appreciated.

Hi beowolf,

Thanks for an absolutely excellent post - it's nice to see that the 4.6 F-150 owners are as happy with their gains as our 5.4 3V F-150 owners are!

It's funny, here not to long ago I was brought into a major chipmaker's facility, and their vaunted head tuner was only able to get a very small gain from the 2005 4.6 F-150 - Well, this past dyno day event here at Troyer Performance, we had a 2005 4.6 F-150 here, of the exact same code as the numerous trucks that were rented by this chipmaker who had called me in a few months ago - and with nothing more than my tuning and a Volant intake kit (which wasn't helping him much, if at all, and certainly not adding anything up top), that little 4.6 F-150 was making every bit as much power as a stock 5.4 3V F-150 makes in terms of actual horsepower available at the rear wheels. (Yes, our tuned 4.6 F-150 made ever bit as much rear wheel horsepower as a stock 5.4 3V F-150!)

Just goes to show you want can be done when you set your mind to it, and also allow adaptive strategy to do it's thing!

I'm so happy to hear that you are enjoying your results, beowolf - just be careful out there, now!

So if I understand you Mike, you sold me .8L of more engine? I really need that darn AF1 intake With Magnaflow cat-back!

With the Scanguage I have, you can see instantly when I floor it goes into "OPEN LOOP"....it's pretty cool. Another thing, it is as if the XCal II is supposed to be stock with my truck.

I try not to speed (haven't any tickets in almost 5 years) and I understand that it is technically unsafe to go above speed limit, BUT a little excessive speed for about 1/8th a mile isn't too bad, right?

Thanks for the response and everything else.

Hi beowolf,

Well, I don't know if I would realistically say we have you almost another liter of engine displacement, that might be a bit of a stretch!

What I *can* say is that with a decent intake kit and our tuning, the 4.6 F-150's are making as much power to the rear wheels as a stock 5.4 3V F-150 is - we showed that again on this past dyno day event, as we have a gentleman who came in with a 4.6 F-150 who had just an intake kit (and it wasn't a nice one like the AF1) and our tuning, and he laid down 212+ Hp to the rear wheels - and we see about 210 RWHP as an average for 4x4 5.4 3V's on our dyno, a few more HP on a 2WD - so that is how I would phrase it, as those are the bare facts.

Now yes, that *does* mean that at that point, you have as much raw horsepower getting to the tires as a stock 5.4 3V - but I don't know if I'd say we have you another .8 liters of engine displacement.

One of the ways we like to best describe the effects of just our tuning is to say that the truck generally feels like it just picked up another 10%-13% more motor under the hood, as that is roughly the HP gain - the torque gains run about 13%-18%, so I guess you can pick all kinds of numbers - we just prefer to talk about what we observe, and the best way we can figure to describe it in an accurate manner.

The bottom line is, our 4.6 F-150 owners are at least as happy as our 5.4 F-150 owners are.

Glad you're having fun - oh, and by the way - doing an 1/8th mile blast usually doesn't impose real danger generally speaking, as the speeds aren't that high - now blasting for a 1/4 mile non-stop at full-throttle will get you up into some jail-time speeds if you have an unsympathetic law enforcement officer - as well as the normal stuff about wanting to be careful & not endanger anyone etc - I know, I know, sometimes it just feels god to "do it."

So just be careful out there!

Damn I miss these threads wulf, you need to post in the 04-06 forum. I think the story kicks ***, keep'em coming. On 37's it's tough to beat much from a dig but if I get'em from a roll the mods pay off every now and then. I was going to go for full bolt-on status but realized I was waisting money early on. I could have been s/c'd by now with the money in boltons I've put in.

Take care!

You won't be sorry.

I'm actually thinking about the Volant (sp?) intake for my truck. I like how it is enclosed which should help with my little off-roading escapades...

I might call Troyer and get their opinion on it first though.

I know everyone loves the AF1 but it is open and for me that is bad bad bad.

Talking

Do it, you won't be sorry......with my 2005 4.6L, I am sitting at about 216 RWHP and almost 265 RWTQ. Nothing but grins from ear to ear.

PS....for all you 04+ 4.6L owners out there, ProCharger does have a supercharger in the works for us. In their application guide, it is listed as "coming soon"

ROFL, what a way to relive this thread.

Thanks for the comments....I thought you guys/gals might like the story.

I have another thread in this part of the forums about my race with a stock 5.4L 4x4. T'was great! Things got pretty heated in that thread with some trolls throwing their .02 in, but a great post IMO!

Josiah, I lurch in the '04 threads still but don't have much to add....I'm almost stock and I just read about your mods/stories, etc. Plus, the STX really doesn't get much respect there LMFAO! It's always great to hear your 4x4 stories/videos that you post...and much appreciated from my end.

Thanks for the nice posts
